Angry Dead cylinder

Saturday morning, on my way to work down RT70 pulling a "mountain" when suddenly a miss. A bad miss.Felt like a coil pack(have had much experience).Lunch time spent finding the dead cylinder #2 passenger side not fireing. Pulled the coil pack checked it with a meter, still good. The boot is discolored.I pull the plug (bosch platinum less than 7k). The end of the porcelin section is gone but the little arm is still there. Take it to the dealer, computer code pulled, bad coil pack .Replace said pack, still missing on #2. Compression test shows less than 20LBS of compression in that cylinder. Dealer to repair motor under the power train warranty they gave me after bringing up the piston slap issue. Has any one ever had this happen? What can I do to prevent this from happening again?Buy a deisel? Driving a focus now as a rental.Culture shock.

I had a similar thing happen to a spare car I had (Old Honda Civic) that I put Bosch Platinums in. The plug did the same thing yours did and because it wasn't firing correctly the rings got weakened by the lack of ignition.

Just a thought.

Smile dead cylinder

Dealer called and said they had something to show me. I went in and looked at the head from my motor sitting on a work bench and see a rectangular hole along one side of the exhaust valve. Looked like a plasma cutter hit it at full power. Dealer asked what plugs I used and said they thought that the valve hit the spark plug. But when I told them the little arm projection on the plug was still there they backed off that trail and said that it would be covered under warranty. On a side note they took me to my engine and I was able to look at the cylinder walls for damage.I didn't find any damage as of 77k miles. Feeling better about my 5.4L triton.

silvurserfer,
Don't you think it strange that they would try to lay blame on the valve hitting a plug. It would infer that you installed plugs that were too long. Lets suppose that you did. How long do you thing the engine would run if the valves hit the plugs? I would be afraid to let anyone so ignorant work on my truck. Wouldn't you?
