New Diesel Noises

Guys-

great board here. i'm relatively new to the Ford thing. I had a 2000 SD V10 2wd AT which i used to haul my toy, a off road only Jeep CJ-7. The V10 did alright but no where near as strong as my new PSD, but thats another thread.

Anyways, my question here is in reference to the noises eminating from my diesel. I am new to the diesel world, i know a bunch about gas engines but precious little about diesels other then the basics. the noise in question sounds like a vacuum leak, only loud enough to be heard in the cab while driving. it occurs then cruising along at a constant speed with RPMs between 1200-1900. when accelerating this sucking sound disappears and the turbo whine takes it place. is this a point where there is vacuum instead of boost. Where does the turbo begin making boost? 2000 rpm?. What does the injector pump sound like. Please excuse my ignorance but I want to make sure everything if running right with my new rig before i begin the mods! lift, exhaust, intake, chip. Any help will be greatly appreciated as will any links for first time diesel owners for PROVEN performance modifications.

2003 SD F250 4x4 PSD 6sp 3.73LS

thanks,

Mike
