Pingy Noise Upon Cold Start.........

I get this noise upon cold start-up and seems to go away after warmed up a bit. Sounds like maybe it is coming from the pulley area but not completely sure.

Anyone have this? Any ideas of the noise or problem? Thanks.

I have the 2002 SCrew 5.4 L. When I start up cold I hear a whining noise and when I drive it cold I hear a pinging noise. I took it to ford and of course they couldn't hear it. Im not sure what it is. When the truck warms up then it goes away.

Same exact thing. I'm not NUTS Maybe I'll try taking ti in and see if they ca re-produce the sound. The problem is the truck is warm by the time I get there and the noise is gone! I hate to leave it overnight. Oh well. My 99 did not do this.

Cold start pinging

My '97 F-150 with 72K always had a slight knock when cold and you pull away. Sounds like a lack of oil to the lifters. Goes away in a few seconds. Took it to the dealer, same thing, didn't do it for them. Only when dead clod starting. But no problems to date. She's getting traded in for the new '04.

according to ford, these noises are completely within the realm of acceptability. I noticed that when I finally sprung for the SuperChip, from mike t., that the noises stopped. has to do with the factory timing issues. not sure about the whining noises, though. maybe just some rusty belt wheels? I guess some noises are inherent to the triton motors. we've had a few in the family.

Hi

Maybe the whining noise on start up is the clutch fan kicking in. It does that on my 99SC w/4.6L. I assume newer models still use clutch fan?

No pinging...but the clicking "mini diesel" sound on cold starts sure quieted down alot when i switched to MC FL820S oil filter.

Look around here..old threads...been posted about pinging and i think some got a fix?

Good Luck...OT

btw...MF150..my schip did just opposite. After install i got ALOT of noise..found cause..pedal to metal/high revs. etc.

I have the pinging sound also. It seems to be on the front of the motor, but I have no idea what it is. I'm going to start paying more attention to the fan clutch though.

same deal

When I first got my truck I almost flipped out when I heard that sound too, I thought it was the dreaded piston slap. So I took it in and they told me that it was the clutch fan that needed to be adjusted. They kept it overnight and now only in really cold conditions do I hear it anymore. What still makes me freakin angry though is the all to prevalent ping problem

..

2002 supercrew 4.6L ticking/tapping on cold start

My 2002 4.6 taps and ticks on a cold start. Ford says this is a normal condition for this engine. The problem is not all of them do it. It sounds like piston slap, but getting an answer from ford is impossible.

The pinging sound that I am hearing is definately not piston slap. I'm almost positive that it is coming from the outside of the motor, not the inside.

I got an '02 F-150 with a 4.6L with about 95K miles on it six months ago from a Ford dealership. Since then I've spent about $3,500 fixing all sorts of stuff. The engine developed a ticking sound on cold start ups about three months ago. It's getting louder, and happens when the engine is not really cold also, just on a re-start after say half an hour. It last for about 3 - 5 minutes then it goes away. Took to my mechanic and they say it's piston slap, but all I read says that stopped after the 2000 model year. Does anybody have any idea what it could be? Plug? Exhaust leak? I'm taking it to the dealership where I bought it tomorrow, will let you know what they say. My mechanic says I need to replace the engine. Not happy about that prognosis - $6,000 to fix a $9,000 truck?
