4.6 problem

First off I've got an 01 Scab w/39K miles and an automatic. I was driving my truck back from town tonight when a couple of miles from the house I start hearing a weird noise coming from the engine. I is a low freqency grumble when I step on the gas. When I got to the house I popped the hood to take a listen. When I gave it a little gas the intake sounded almost like I had the airbox removed. It was a really loud airflow sound. After it peaked out and the RPM's started to drop it sounded like something was still spinning at the acellerated RPM's and not dropping in speed with the rest of the engine. And then at the end there was a rattle for a couple of seconds. I bought the truck used a couple of weeks back and it came with a 3 month 4K warranty so I had it towed into the dealership tonight. Does anybody have any clue what this may be. I don't want to think I dropped $21K for something with a blown engine.

I hope it isn't anything major man, but $21G's for the truck with 39,000 miles? YIKES.

Mine was $20,000 even brand new, but it's a reg cab.

Well it had 37 when I bought it and blue book was a hair over 21. Considering I was upside down about 3 grand on my trade in I thought I got a pretty good deal. That remains to be seen as of now though.

Well it ended up being the bearings in the water pump making the rattling noise. As for the air sound the fan clutch is stuck in the on posistion. Luckily the water pump is covered under the used vehicle warranty that came with the truck but for some reason the fan clutch isn't. The dealership wanted $170 to replace it. I found one a autozone for $55, so I'm just going to replace it myself. I'm glad is wasn't anything too serious. I just hope this doesn't start a trend. I had a '91 Aerostar before and it had 190K when I traded it in and never had any serious problems with it. Hopefully this ford will be as reliable.

Axle - if your fan clutch is bad, then this would sound like the perfect opportunity to make the switch over to electric fans and free up some HP. Not sure what your plans are for the truck though.

I'd love to but it was hard enough to scrounge up the $60 for the stock fan clutch let alone a couple hundred for electrics. It's in the future plans. though.
