MPG 4.6 vs. 5.4
I am possibley going to be ordering a new truck in January. I am trying to decide on the engine size, 5.4 or 4.6. what kind of MPG are you guys seeing with your 4x4 trucks?
TIA

Hello,
I have an 02 f150 4X4 Supercab with the 5.4. I have about 6500 miles on it now and the mileage hasnt gotten any better.
I am getting about 10 with the city driving. Not even very good on the road. Not sure what to do, but the mileage is terrible. I dont drive my truck hard. I knew that it wouldnt be great, but I did expect it to come a little closer to the window sticker estimates.
Not very pleased so far.

(maybe a little less than 12 now that the cold weather is here)
and thats with running 92 octane and a chip, exhaust and intake.

We've had our SCrew 4X4, 5.4L for a little over 2 years, 36,000 miles. I've been tracking our mileage on Ownersite.com since the start and our overall average is 14.9MPG, best was around 19.6 and the worst was around 10 (towing a U-Haul trailer). My wife mainly drives the truck and she is a stay at home mom, so alot of times it's short trips to the store and we still get 14-16MPG with mixed driving. I have no mods as far as the engine goes, stock intake, stock type air filter. The only thing we have is a Tonneau cover. I feel pretty good about the mileage we get considering the size and weight of the vehicle and we love the way it rides. I'd go with the 5.4L again in a heartbeat, nothing against the 4.6L as I have never owned one. Good Luck.
Well, look at it this way. Pay an extra $500-$600 now for the option, or pay that much in mods to get the 4.6 up even close to it's (5.4) power.
Now, if power is not really a concern (you don't tow or haul or race
) then the 4.6 would propably do you very well.
If you must have a stick shift, then you can only get that in the 4.6.
Isn't the V6 'standard'? So, you'd have to pay more to even get the 4.6? Get the 5.4.
I get about 14-15 mpg with mine. 80% highway, 20% city.
Good Luck!

You can see my truck in the signature. I get 13 to 15 in town, depending how much right foot I use.
I get 17 to 18 on the interstate. I live in a small city in the mountains of Virginia, so your mileage may be better in flatter country.

I have a 2000 extended cab longbed with a fiberglass tonneau cover. I have a 5.4 automatic 2wd with the 3.08 gear and about 20,000 miles on it. I get about 15 to 16 in the city and 19 on the hwy. I was suprised because this is about the same mileage I got with my '93 4.0 automatic 2wd ranger.
my buddy has the 4.6 Scab with long bed. He gets 13-14
I have the 5.4 Scab with short bed. I get 12-13
Like previously mentioned, if you're like most of us, your gonna spend hundred or thousands more to improve the power so go ahead and start out with the 5.4

MPG's
I have a 2002 Lariat Supercab with 5.4, K7N FIPK, MagnaFlow catback exhaust, and Superchips Microtuner performance program installed. I average 16 mpg commuting, and better than 17 mpg on the highway.
My 99 averages 16.5mpg. 60% Highway / 40% City. I have gotten over 20 on the freeway, and it generally gets about 18-19mpg during long distance cruising at 75-80 mph.
If you don't need the power, the 4.6l is just fine, and seems to get about a mpg or two better. if you want the power, than the 5.4 is your choice, though the 4.6 with a stick is very quick option also.

My driving is mixed, but I usually get between high 12MPG and low 14 MPG, typically it's high 13 MPG.
The only mod is K&N air filter - which didn't make a diference

In my opinion it has more to do with your driving style.
If I was driving my 74 Nova with a stock 350 heavy I could drop the mileage down to the 10 mpg range. If I was doing highway driving (2.73:1 gears, no OD) I could pull 22 mpg, with intelligent driving.
Now I have a race build 400 pulling 475 RWHP / 550 something ft/lbs (3.73:1 eaton posi) and my maximum mileage has dropped to 18 mpg.
If new trucks could only get 10-12 mpg on a 5.4, which is much smaller than my Nova engine I would be VERY surprised.
So, until my 5.4 comes in I'm going to stick behind the 'its how you drive it' spiel.

For what it's worth:
I owned a 98 F150 Extended cab before my 01 'Screw. The 98 had the 4.2L V6, the 'Screw has the 5.4. My younger brother has the F150 Ext. Cab with the 4.6L.
My 5.4 gets identical mileage to the 4.2 V6 I had before. Obviously, the 5.4 has way more oomph !!
The 4.6 in my brother's truck made it to 415 miles on a single 25 gallon tank doing mostly 75mph on a interstate trip. My 5.4 didn't get that far when it was stock. I had to stop around 375 miles.
Since I made the mods listed in my signature, I routinely get 410-425 miles to a tank in my 5.4.
I plan on adding electric fans and under drive pulleys in the near future. From what I've read here, that should help even more.
After driving all 3 trucks, get the 5.4. You won't regret it...
