WrongDayJ?

I saw the pictures of the F150XL emblem on your F-150 it looks great, I was just wonderin what the acetone does to the emblem exactly to make it so shiny?
After seeing yours I was thinking of doing it to my truck but don't know if I should or not, I have the chrome F-150 XL with the black backing emblem, same as yours, How does the acetone make the black backing shiny like that?

Ford chrome plates the entire emblem first. It is all chrome. Then they put a black acrylic paint all over the emblem except the raised letters. Then on the XLT's, they put vinyl lettering on.

Acetone simply removes this black paint and lets the chrome under it show again.

Technically, you can use brake parts cleaner, toluene, even goo-gone to remove the paint from your emblems. Be careful though- get any of this stuff on your trucks body paint and it's bad news so be careful.

Good luck with yours- they really do look good all chrome, and it's not hard at all.

Later,

---J

I have an XLT and when the acetone touched the XLT letters, they just disolved so you definitely don't want this touching anything unless you want it to be stripped!

Ok, just one more question for those of you that have done this (WrongDayJ, and XLTsport) After I remove the black label with the acetone and polish up the F-150 plate later on down the road will the emblem start to rust or have any stains on it?
Thanks for all the help and after a few more mods on my F-150 I will get some pics for everyone here to see, Most of the mods and upgrades have been due to everyones input , so thanks a bunch!

I haven't had any problems and it's been about 2 or 3 months
