I gotta get better gas mileage or it's gone? help?
I checked it today 12 or 13 highway. 93 4x4 300 6 cyl. I've tuned it up (new plugs, air filter). I know these aren't great for gas mileage, but i hope to at least 14-16 mpg on the highway. I'm going to get some Berrymans fuel injector cleaner and try that, I've heard the drop in K&N's didn't do that much, nor did duel exhausts. If you guys got any ideas I surely would appreciate it...I drive to much for 12 or 13 that would break me, I was told by quite a few people they'd do better than that, guess I should've researched it more..... oh well

my '94 300 got 17 mpg on the highway. 4x4, auto, 3.08 gears. how fast are you driving? that makes a huge difference. try driving 65 to 70 mph. is your truck jacked up in the air? that takes a lot of fuel (not to mention making your truck unsafe to you and everyone else). if you have a 4x4, do you have your hubs unlocked?

it's not jacked up, factory height is all, it has 3:55 gears and is a 5 spd, however it does have those dumb automatic hubs, they could be malfunctioning, there is a funny grind in the right front side when I'm starting from stop sign or stop light and sometimes when I turn a corner at low speeds.... I know its a full size truck and all, but I was told by several different people it would get anywhere from 15 to 17, that's all I want, hell I could get a 351 and get 12 mpg. Thanks for your help fella's

your hubs are probably toast. this is a BIG weakness in the early Ford autohubs. they went out on my '94 and on my brother's '95. you are probably turning all of the drivetrain because it isn't releasing. you can check it out by having someone slowly back your truck (and view from the front). see if the driveshaft is turning (from the front) to the transfer case. if it is, you are locked. be careful!! don't get yourself run over!!

my '81 only got 9 mpg out of it's 300. i would have loved to get 12 mpg.
even with it's poor gas mileage i think i would rather have my old 300 than the 4.2 in my '97. The 4.2 has more H.P. and is supposed to have more torque, but the torque is so high up in the power band, its pretty much useless. The 300 had gobbs of torque at a fast idle, and would pull just about anything, it was even used in the 1 ton vans.
I've pulled my '84 bronco II with my '97 (on a 1800 lb. tandem axle trailer, just over 6000 lbs. total ) and the 4.2 only gets about 9 mpg. while towing (19 mpg normaly) it did ok, but i had to keep the rpm's up to keep from bogging down the engine. my old '81 with the 300 could pull that much wieght without a wimper.
i miss that old truck, but when the wheel fell off, it was time to let go.
