Gas Mileage

I have a 00 Harley F-150 that i use as a daily driver. I plan on getting a used (current bodystyle) F150, as a new daily driver, but i want it to be decent on gas mileage. I'm looking towards 96-97 (whichever was the 1st year of this design) and want to spend around 4-5 grand if i can tops. What i wanted to know was what kind of gas mileage can i expect with an UN-modded 4.2L V-6 (auto or manual) and if there's anything i should look for in it. Anyone also know what kinda mileage a pre-updated stlye ranger gets? thanks alot.

1997 is the first model year of the newer style. be careful of '97 V-6s as they had a problem with timing gear cover related leaks of the coolant system. my V-6 4x4 gets 16-17 in winter (minnesota) and 18-19 in summer. it's a 5 speed. some on this board have complained about poor synchros on the 5 speed and have had some issues. mine has been fine and actually shifts smoother now than when new. the usual 5 speed beef is a "crunch" on the 2-3 upshift.

Some get good, some dont....

I currently get 14'ish to the average... Thats about 280 miles or so on a full 24.5 gallon tank.., I have plenty of mods, and the gas milage is the same with them off, so it can be good for some and bad for others, i live in beaverton oregon, and its a bit hilly, and most of my driving is in town. I got a litlle over 300 on a tank once on the way to idaho in the middle of the night and it was in january, though.....

I ve also heard alot of bad stuff about the 97's most of the bugs were worked out by 99, mine is a 2000.

theres my .02$

I am getting about 360-400 miles per tank and the only mods i have is the drop in k&n filter and the poorboy air box mod....i just hit a half a tank and am sitting at 210 miles...but as you all know that the second half always goes faster....

Thanks for the responses guys. My sister's husband owns a few used car lots, so he's gonna hook me up with a truck. Its gotta be a Ford, toyota or nissan though. I won't know which yet until i go out there to see what he's got. I just need a truck thats gets good mileage, thats why i'm lookin towards v-6's or compact trucks. and i don't want a 4x4 cuz i don't need it. I also only wanna spend around 4 grand. Anybody know what kinda mileage a 93-94ish ranger extended cab 4x2 gets for the different engines? Thanks again guys.

I owned lots of rangers....from 3 liter 5 speeds to 4 liter auto,s & their mileage sucks. The best i ever got was 35 mpg. with a 3 litre 5 speed. My 00 silverado x-cab with a 4.3 does better.

well since my 85 only get about 10 mpg, i'd consider anything 20 and up decent and 25 and up good. Thanks for the responses
