oil consumption
oil consumption
My 2000 4.2 150 has 24,000 miles on it. I bought it used from the dealer with 19,000 miles. I had the oil changed at 20,000 and 23,000 miles and each time noticed that it had lost a quart at about 1000-1200 miles. the dealer says this is normal. I think that is b.s. Does anyone else have a similar problem with their 4.2?
p.s. i also have a 1988 Bronco II. It has the 2.9 v-6 with 171,000 miles on it and does not use oil.

I have a 2001 with the 4.2, and mine uses no oil between changes. But it only has 12,000 miles on it though. Your truck should not use that much oil at all between changes accounting for the low miles you have on it. It should'nt use that much unless you race 115 mph non-stop, full throttle in the desert in the Baja 1000!
My 01 with the v6 dosen't use a drop between changes. I used to have an Aerostar with the 3.0 liter. It generally used 1-1 1/2 qt's between changes as it got up in years. I did not find this to be "normal". A low mileage vehicle should not be using much oil under average driving conditions. One thing that seems to be common with Ford is bad valve guides. A coworker of mine recently had the 4.6L replaced on his 01 after only 5K due to excessive oil consumption. The problem was the valve guides. It used 5qt's between oil changes. They first told him it was normal.
I have owned many vehicles during my lifetime. This is not normal.
