Noise at startup?
Soemtimes when I start my truck in the mornings after sitting all night it makes a weird sound. It happens after the engine has begun to run right after I let off the igntion switch. It sort of sounds like the flywheel is hitting the starter gear cause it isn't retracting fast enough. Never does it thought if I have been driving around and stop then start back up, only after it is cold. Anyone else have this condition? And is it something to worry about? Thanks
Mine does the same on cold mornings makes a whiring/squeal sound plan on bringing it to the dealer have it looked at because i am still under warranty. It only makes the sound for 1 or 2 seconds then stops, I'll let you know what the Dealer says. Anyone else had this problem, if so what was the fix?
The starter was the first thing that I thought of, but I had my friend (who's a mechanic for UHaul) and he said it sounds like the piston slap problem that he's heard on a lot of the Ford trucks at UHaul. I did some searches on this forum and found that the piston slap problem only pertains to the V8's but I have a V6.
To me it sounds like a metallic screeching sound. It only does it when its cold (like around 32 degrees F. or colder) and it only lasts for a couple seconds. And, it only does it right after I start the truck about the time I let go of the key.
I do have fully synthetic Mobile-1 10W-30 currently. I am planning on switching to 5W-30 for the winter, but it's not due for an oil change for another 1000 miles. I am using the Motorcraft FL400S oil filter. I've found messages on this forum about oil filters going bad, so I was going to try replacing the oil filter. Does anyone think this could be the problem? Or do you think that it might be that the oil is too thick for the colder temperatures?
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

My truck does this as well. Could it possbly be an unpressurized vacuum line due to the cold temperatures. When it recharges it might screem....Who knows, just pondering. I don't know what I'm talking about.

my g'dad said that he has never owned a ford that didnt whine a little on cold mornings. my old 97 4.2 whined every cold morning and still does to this day. no problems.
cold morning noise
It must be a Ford thing. My 97 has 93,000 miles on it still runs and drives like new, but it makes the noise you are describing everytime it is really cold and has been sitting all night. It only last a couple of seconds then it goes away. i figured it was just a ford noise like power steering pumps. if someone knows something different, let us know.
