02XLT,

What ever you do don't bet against a 4.2 5spd VS a 4.6 auto. You will lose. In My Expert Opinion (notice the lack of Humble) The fastest body configuration is the reg cab work or XL no air short box. Anybody disagree? The fastest power train ¼ mile race is in decending order using a 3.55:1 differential gear ratio; 4.6 w/5 spd, 5.4 w/Auto
4.2 w/5 spd, 4.6 w/Auto and 4.2 w/Auto.

Regards

re: Ranger Edge

I rented a reg 4.0 4x4 Ranger a week ago, and I was not impressed by it. Do the 3:73 gears make that much of a difference? I had trouble matching the speed of other vehicles on the road while entering the freeway at WOT. This isn't meant to flame anyone, but I thought the truck was a 4 cylinder til I popped the hood to fill the windshield washer tank.,,,,,98

actually... I double checked my numbers. you have a 4x4 which puts you up around 4000lbs just like me... 5speed reg cab 4.0 4x4's should run mid 16 while the reg cab 4.0 4x2 5speed should run low 16 stock, sorry. with a chip and filter you should beat a ext cab 5.9 and should hang with reg cab 5.9's

98-screamer -

was it a 02 because the new rangers finally have the 4.0 overhead cam like the explorer does - it has around 40 more horse power than the early 4.0 ohv, i imangine now they have some pretty good ***** as even the explorers you could notice quite a differnece between the two engines.

I have a 5.4l ha ha, sorry just couldn't help it

Just have to ask if any 4.6 or 4.2 tryed to race against a 5.4 who is pulling something or say to downshift when passing? that is where the trans both have a 1:1 ratio but the auto has the advantage of actually having a better ratio becuase of the tourque convertor's torque multiplication so infact the 5.4 would have more hp and tourque from the engine aswell as a gear ratio benifit from the trans

Just one more point for the guy who beat a mustang - he was playing with you - I get power strokes, s10s and all this trying to race, even a chev that came out of a dealership lot who took off at the green light and i didnt even Know he was racing until i heared his motor screaming so then i actually steped on it (thats with my mustang).

Point is not everybody races from the light I always wait until i hear/or see the other person step on it (not a good plan for winning) otherwise personally i think people who take off fast for no reason look like morons

No way a Stock 5spd V6 is beating an auto 4.6L with equal drivers. But we can argue for ever. List me some 1/4 mile tmies or something??

Wink

Had to be an 2002, I don't think there are many 2001 rental trucks running around with 1700 miles on them. Well, I'd believe a Lightning or a Harley,,,, maybe.

u never said how many miles it had on it, u should be able to tell if its a 02 as they look different than the old style - new edge style like the explorer sports - doesn't really matter though as the trucks are still a little to small

Ranger Edge 4x4

Well my truck isn't small at all to me and I'm 6,2 200Lb's. It's amazing the look's I get on the road from people, not to mention when I stop at a light they always give me a thumb's up and say "nice truck man" I can't stress how much I love this truck Ford did such a nice job! The reason the Edge trim atracted me was because I'm only 18 and I liked the look of the high boddy line and the toughnes of the hole truck. Not to mention the hood damn it's soooo nice!! Also I use my truck everyday for fixing Spa's so it has plenty of room for all my tools! belive me I have alot to carry with me Damn I love it!!!

I gotta get pic's soon!

Oh and black 150 offroad just because you have a 5.4L doesn't mean your engine is better then the V-6's for example my dad has a 2000 F150 XLT 5.4L 4x4 Off road and I easly smoke him in the 1/4mile and from 0-60. So I don't get what you mean by your lucky to have a 5.4L....

Didn't know i said i was lucky to own a 5.4, but now that u mention it i am.

When I said the ranger was too small I meant yeah its a bit tight in the cab (i have a reg cab so i need the room for 3 people) and ranger super cabs dont have much room in the back, but the box is also smaller (need room for sled) but it makes sense becuase it is a physically smaller truck - some times the f150 seems to big to drive in the city (especilly down town).

I never said i din't like the look of them, the actually look good and they now use the explorer 4x4 insted of the vac lock hubs, i've even seen some come factory with bilstein shocks and 31" rubber, plus the extra power from the ohc 4.0 is good

As far as raceing a 02 ranger - i never claimed a 5.4 was faster or that i've ever raced one - all i said was that there a little small that being they are also lighter and built lighter in the process

The other reason I bought a f-150 is so that I can pull a 5th wheel or a trailer in which a ranger would have a much harder time and espectially in the mountains a ranger would exceed its gvw and not be allowed to tow (new safety laws, even the 1/2 tons that are pulling large 5th wheels in some areas wont be allowed in as they are unsafe (over gvw), same with 3/4 tons and some people will have to switch to 1 tons to pull what they used to use 1/2 tons for just because they exceed there gvw)

I'm 6' 1" and 230 pounds, I had a little trouble getting in and out of that thing I literally could not get out if I couldn't open the door all the way. I only cracked my head on the low roof once, that's all it took, LOL! I guess if I had wanted to readjust the seat every time, I could have scooted it back. Don't get me wrong, I liked it well enough, it just seemed a little doggy in the midrange. Top and bottom end power were good.,,,,98
