Thanks , need help on axle code

Thanks Max Mitchell and everyone else, but I'm slow when it comes to some vehicle terms. I found the sticker on my door jab but and under the word axle there was the number 18, and under the letter "R" which i guess stands for rear there was the number 9. Do you know what those numbers mean?

I looked under the rear end and there was a tab and I believe that the gears are 3.08 but there was no peroid between the numbers. It probably doesn't matter but I wanted to run it through the message board first. Also I ran my VIN number and there was no information on rear end gears. Is that normal or what?

thanks for any help.[list] [*]1999 Ford F-150 Supercab XL [*]V6 4.2L [*]Airraid intake /Dynomax SuperTurbo Exhaust

Thumbs up boot-

You're more than welcome. The rear end information is on the driver's door jamb, under "axle", like you saw. The 18 is a open (non-limited slip) with a 3.08 gear ratio. The rear cover tag can be confusing because it contains other information like the build dates. The limited slip is an option and is not nearly as common as the open. Your rear end type/size is the 8.8"; the larger 9.75" unit comes on the 5.4 trucks.
