1990 jumping when accelerating

1990 jumping when accelerating
Just bought my first manual ford 1990 f150 4.9l in line 6.
When I get on the highway and give it gas it sometimes chugs jumps sputters. For lack of a better description.
any ideas what could cause that. Spark plugs? Fuel injector?
also when idling I smell a strong gasoline smell
any suggestions and/or help would be appreciated
