So I have seen all the other threads about mpg and everyone talking about only getting 14 or 15mpg, but I am getting 12.2 on the highway with cruise control doing 60 mph. I have 3.31 gears.

I am still on my first tank of gas from the dealer so I am thinking maybe they used E85 or something. Should I wait for a few tanks, or is there a problem?

I get 10.5 to 11.4 on a regular basis. However, I do a LOT of short trip driving.

 

They shouldn't have used E85 in an EB unless something has changed since the 2011s since mine says right on the fill port not to use it. I have found that using the cruise control makes a huge difference in these trucks. I've driven the same route with the same level of traffic at the same speed and every time using the cruise as much as possible will give me a much better result than my foot will. Last week I drove from Little Rock to Denver with a bunch of camping gear in the truck, around Denver then to the Arapaho National Forest pulling a pop up and loaded with gear, back to Denver through the Rocky Mountain National Forest then back to LR with even more stuff in the truck. For the entire trip I averaged 18.0MPG running 75ish the entire time. I was pushing 20 until the nasty headwinds of Kansas.

 

first off be paitent, go fill up with some premium and reset your trip meter and go from there. what is your normal driving style? I say the EB is "sensitive" to its mpg.

truck is still new and in what ford considers the brake in period. Don't stress it until you get to 2000 miles or so. You should see a pretty good improvement then.

 

it'll take awhile man.. i just went through this as well and finally hit 2700 miles on the truck. This is where i started to see better fuel economy. Give it a couple thousand miles before you really calculate the mpg.

 

That is what I thought, but I wanted to make sure there was nothing bad going on.

i'm getting 17.4 on average and that's with 305/65/18 bfg's ,,between 15 to 20,000 miles I have seen an increase in mpg's so give it some time

 

FWIW I average 19.9 MPG this weekend pulling a 12ft enclosed trailer with 2 sleds in it, up and over a mountain pass this weekend. (have to bring them home fromt the cabin to do some maintanence before next riding season). Doesn't weigh alot, I'd guess around 3000lbs but i was still impressed.

 

Yea give er some time... I never had that bad of fuel mileage when mine was new.. The worst i got was 16.8 mpg's and that was the first tank.. Ever since then it has gotten really good mpgs.. Im sitting at 5500 miles and constantly pull off 18.5 to 20.5 every tank.

Of course it also depends on the way you are driving it.. Keep it out of boost for your best mpg's... I try to let it shift around 2k rpm and thats when i get my good mpg's.. Oh and never roll the windows down, thats when you hear the turbos and then you will never get the best mpg's cause your foot will be a little heavier listening to them

 

I have a pretty light foot and I always use the cruise on the highway. I only gun it when it is necessary for pulling into traffic. I even reset the mpg while already up to speed and let it go for about 15 miles. The mpg stayed between 12.0 and 12.4. It will be a probably the end of the week before I need gas. I will see how it does then.

 

I got a new '13 about 7 weeks ago and right at 1K miles on it.

After about 500 miles, I noticed some improvement in MPG - going from 13.5 up to 14.5.

So the trend is looking positive.

 

I got my 2013 the last of December. It now has 22,000 miles on it and the mpg went from 15.5 when it was new to around 17 now with a mix of 2 lane roads and interstate. I get 19 running 65, and about 16 running 80.
I have a super crew with 3.73 gears.

 

I feel better this morning. Took a short roadtrip that emptied out the tank pretty much. I filled it up with Chevron 93 and my mpg went from 12.2 up to 19.5 within just a couple highway miles doing 70mph. Must have been some really bad dealer gas or something.

 

Here is my opinion on the matter. If it's a brand new truck you should be romping on that throttle hard and then let it coast to slow down. This seats the rings completely and will prevent smoking later on in the engine's life. My 13 EB, with 49 miles on it drove it off the lot and floored it immediately. Did this repeatedly for the first tank of gas. Mileage will suffer a bit, but still managed to get 15.8mpg coming home from Dallas which was 75mph interstate around 366 miles. At 900 miles I changed the oil and put full synthetic in it. If I watch my foot I can keep it above 17 mpg in town, highway I haven't grannied it yet, but I will say this... pulled my boat yesterday which is around 4000lbs at about 55mph and it was able to get around 15-15.5mpg with the boat behind it.

Bottomline, don't worry about mileage this early... run it hard and let it coast and then let it cool down over night. After about 500 miles, fill it up and see what you can get out of it. Just experience speaking here.
