V-6 Average MPG
This is probably a subject that has already been beat to death, but why not hit it a couple more times! My 97 4.2 V-6 Manual Truck gets an average of 14 miles to the gallon, and thats being generous. I have read posts that claim 17-22 miles to the gallon. This is the first F150 Ive owned so I have nothing to compare it too. Oh ya, I have the regular cab, short bed XLT. What are you gettin mpg wise?
My truck has averaged 19.1 miles to the gallon from day one for the 30,200 miles since I bought it new.
I've noticed that the highway gas mileage will go up significantly on trips of 300 miles or more. I can drive from Houston to San Antonio and I'll get around 19.5 MPG on the Houston to San Antonio leg and about 21.5 mpg on the return leg. This happened a short time back when I drove at 65 MPH to San Antonio and 70 MPH on the return trip.
It seems as if it takes the computer chip about 150 miles or so to adjust to your trip and driving habits. I do try to get maximum gas mileage.
I can drive around in the "parking Lot" Houston traffic and will still get 18 to 19 miles to the gallon. The worst gas mileage I've gotten for a tank of gas is 16.9 MPG.
This is my first full size truck and I love it. I drove a Subaru Legacy before the F150 and will always have a truck from now on. The truck has been flawless and drives as good now as it did the day I purchased it.

I drive easily to maximize mileage . . . i'm getting 17 to 18 in mixed driving around minneapolis . . . and i get about 19 mpg @ 70 mph in freeway driving . . . the truck is a reg cab, long box 4x4 with V-6 and 5 speed . . . 3.55 gears and 17" wheels . . worst tank was 15.5 mpg in the dead of winter and short tripping around town . . . 15 below zero stuff . . i'm using amsoil 5W20
it is a truck
Me? I get about 14mpg around town and I have seen up to 20mpg on road trips (heading down the highway).I am sure I could do better for the city driving but it is a truck and I am happy with the mpg I get.
Mine's a SC LWB, 4R70W trans, 3.55 gears. I get right around 19 mpg - mixed city and highway. I drive like there's an egg under my foot. I was getting 25 mpg but then they fixed the "golden" pump that I found. DAMN!

I have a 99' 150 4.2 Extended cab, short bed, Automatic, 3.31 ratio, 235/70R16 tires and a K&N drop in filter. I drive a mix of rush hour stop and go traffic for about an hour a day plus a general mix of city/ short highway stints well above the speedlimit throughout the day and fill up about once a week with 89 Plus Gas (tends to ping a bit on regular). The average of my last 50 tanks (yes, I have kept the log on my last 50 tanks) is 15.8 miles per gallon. It tends to be its highest during the late fall (no A/C, windows up, before the reformulated gas hits) and its worst in the mid spring (windows down or up with AC and still reformulated gas). Long trips don't really make much of a mileage difference, increasing it by maybe a mile per gallon. I have no bed cover and an "aero" bug flector (stupid love bugs). Truck is at 44K miles and has had the injectors flushed once (at 25K)
i only have around 7500 miles on my truck so far, but it seems to get a consistent 15.5 city and 18.5 highway.... i live in central texas so it's over 100° every day and i always run max a/c full blast for the first 10 minutes of driving, then turn it down to low or medium, but it's never off. i got it in march and the truck wasn't broken in while it was still cold, so hopefully i'll see some better numbers when it cools down.
I can get 22mpg on the highway @65 mph. I don't even bother getting city mileage, my commute is less than 2 miles, and probably has a dozen traffic lights and stop signs along the way. Last night, my wife got 20mpg at whatever speed she was going (I was sleeping). I have 7,700 miles on my truck.
I've tracked mileage of my truck from day one so I can give you an accurate readout on my truck. I have 43000 km and have gone from a low of 10.5 mpg (pulling a 6000# 5th wheel) to a high of 22.8 mpg (highway cruising) and my average is 15.3 mpg in 3 years of driving. The mileage is improving I believe because of 2 reasons - (1) I used to drive a distance of 3 km 4 times or more per day when I worked which was hard on gas particularly in winter ( now retired); (2) the motor seems to have started to get better mileage after it had about 10000 miles on it. I'm more satisfied with it now than when it was new although you can't expect it to work hard and not feed it.
I must add that these mpg are American as in Canada we are working in Imperial or metric

gas mileage...
I usually get about 15 in the city with the air on - but what I've discovered is that gas mileage tapers off signifigantly after 70 mph. On a road trip from Lubbock to Houston I got 21 mpg on the way back at 70mph, on the way there I went 80-85 and only got 17 mpg.
I also think how "broken-in" your motor is has something to do with it. My truck's mileage was even lower when it was new; now it feels like it has more power, runs smoother, and gets better gas mileage (13,000 miles so far)

I have a K&N with a modified air box and I only get 15 to 17(if I'm lucky) mpg. I do mainly hwy driving but don't drive like grandma either. That is with the air on 90% of the time too. Too damn hot here in OK.
