Loud Screech from Crankshaft Pulley with belt off!! HELP
Hey guys,
i'm a little concerned about my most recent project that started out with a chirp and then progressed to a very loud screech. I replaced the belt and two smooth pulleys and reinstalled and upon start up it still makes the noise. I pulled the belt off and cranked her up and the noise is coming from the crankshaft pulley The brand new belt is being eaten up when its on so i pulled it and checked all the pulleys to see if one was locked up. they all spin and dont seem to be bad but my main concern is the sound thats coming from the crankshaft pulley and im thinking thats my issue. would that cause the belt to slip and burn? i think I'm going to bite the bullet and take her to my mechanic. i stopped driving her yesterday. Thanks for any input

It's crazy how many of these threads are popping up now for basically the same issue. Seems to be related to the crazy cold temperatures we've been having here in the US this winter. Mine was making this same noise last winter when doing a cold start @ 20 degrees or so and after sitting for a week or more.

If it is the harmonic balancer what would have caused it? She has 89K but it kinda came out of no where. There is anothoer post i found from a guy who put his video on you tube showing the exact sound of what mine is poing. see what you think. my mechanic told me it sounded like the timing chains???

I thought you meant a different sound...
Does it sound like this too:

If so, then it is the camshaft synchronizer.
Which is one of these:
Rockauto has'em for $25.89 for Motorcraft and even less for other aftermarket vendors...
The Ford Part Number is: 1F2E-6C315-AA (this supersedes FPN: 4F2Z6C315BA)
Rock Auto's Part is: DY1014
Have fun.

Heck, without looking at it, you might have both problems.
That's located on the top passenger side of the engine.

Ok. Just got her back from my mechanic. You were right. It was the synchronizer. Apparently it's tough to get to per him and he also took a look at the cains while he had the covers off. With the labor involved already he told me he would do the water pump while he was already there for another $80.00(just the price of the pump). She has 90K so what the hec. Might as well. Here's my question....Total for parts and labor was 610.00. Would you say thats about ballpark for that job cause i was tempted to do it myself but was told the part is hard to get to and plus he did the water pump also. total was 5.5 hrs plus parts. Sounds fair I guess. Thoughts? Thanks for all the input on this one. Love this site!!!!
