Air box cut, now that MAF.
I finshed the mod, per Jupiter's excellent directions, this past Sun. Not hard at all, and I finished in just under an hour.....let the cable unhooked longer though. Cant really tell a difference from stock and gas mieleage seems the same as before. Oh well all it cost me was $50 for the k&n. I have a '97 work package with towing pkg and auto. I think it has 3.55 rear end....should I see a big difference with this mod?
I wouldn't see how you'd really notice that much with an auto. If you floor it you should feel some pickup but driving normally I'll guess you'll pick up a little MPG. Did you cut up the airbox? BTW right now I've gone through about 2/3 a tank and have gone 233 miles, still can't drive like a total grandma.
Gave the MAF the ole slice & dice along with the air box. No worrys, No problems. A whole lot betta on da freeway.

Jupiter,
Yea I cut up the airbox close to the band groove to expose as much of the K&N as possible. I avg about 13-14 mpg and was hoping this mod would help that. Dont really step on it a lot...but I do note an improvement in acceleration. I got a 30 gal tank an if I get 400 miles I celebrate! A lot of city miles with a/c. I let you know if mpg improves.

Wow, good job but I wonder whats up with your guys trucks??? I drive 95% highway A/C all the time and I get around 400 miles a tank, 20 gallon tank that is. Wonder whats different, what all do you have, I have 5 speed, 3.55, 97 XLT with about 67k.
Hey Jupiter,
I hate to burst your bubble but maybe you have a tire mod w/o calibrating your speedometer/odometer but the 97 F150 only came with three choices for fuel tanks:
...25-, 30-, 34.7-gallon fuel tanks. Car Review.com
If you are getting 400 miles per tank and you are running the tests down to near-dry, that is 16 mpg, not 20. They are still great trucks but not the choice of the avid commuter.
Carl

I say to a 20 gal tank cause I gas up as soon as the light comes on. Doesnt matter what mods you have if you've gone 400 miles from a full tank and you put in 20 gallons, you got 20 MPG. If it keeps your head from exploding I just got the truck and I have no mods other than the airbox and MAF.
As for not being a good commuter its a hell of a lot better than my old Mustang at 12 MPG driving like a granny

I sliced and diced my MAF this morning it was raining so I couldn't wash it so I might as well work on it... I haven't started it yet cause I'm still letting the computer die... It took me about 45 minutes to complete... I sure hope this beats 200-400 bucks for one of those hi flow MAF. I'll let you know what happens

okay I've got some results for you... I started my truck and let it run for 10 minutes and there was no check engine light. So I drove it to wal-mart a good 10 mile drive... It had a better throttle response. I say I might have picked up at least 2 h.p. at the rear wheels... I am guessing... I did notice a difference though!

AWESOME!!! I'm sure a 300-400 dollar one wouldn't do much more than what you've got, nor would it be worth it. Thats excellent, let me know if you notice any down sides, I have found nothing so far.
GOOD JOB
GOOD JOB
Mine's been diced up for about 2 weeks now and no problems yet. Except for weeker performance on high humidity days(normal).

Just happened to glance at this and saw two possible problems
1)My mind was briefly taken over by aliens or
2)I've read too damn many whats my ratio posts.
Reason you may ask? I have 3.08 I might answer.
I made this post instead of editing the other so anyone wondering why their mileage is WAY far off would not be confused. That said your mileage is still too low

Anyone have a picture of before or after?would be a little better maybe to also see what is cut.thanks.
