Post gotta awsome kill.

well guys, i suppose you should know the whole story. i was down in orlando (since i live in florida) because i was looking for a pep boys so i gan bet a set of blue bulbs for my truck. i drove up and down the road about 3 times and couldn't find it. so i make a u turn and just happened to notice the i turned in front of another f-150 and is was a 4x4. so we are driving down the road, it is 3 lanes, and a light we are coming up to turns yellow so i pull over right next to him. gave him the signal he replied. i asked what he had. it was a 5.4. i told him i had the v-6 and he was like you don't have a chance unless you got NOS or something. but i am like well i wanna see what kind of competition i got. so we took off. i got a horrible start. he took off. i started gaining on him. i thought for sure he would be gone by now but i passed hime and got about 2 car lengths on him.anyway we only got up to about 80 since there was lots of cops in the area and the speed limit was 45. but i can't believe i beat a 5.4. i thought they were supposed to be pretty quick. i was planning on trading me truck for the extended cab sport with the 5.4. not anymore. i will stick with my v-6 5-spd. well i just though i would tell yall about that. oh yeah, after i beat him i called my friend to tell him then i asked him how the heck i get to pep boys. i finally found it but i was 5 mintes to late.

Cool

That guy must have been a terrible driver, or didn't know the brake from the gas.

I owned a 4.2 for two years, now I'm in a 5.4. Don't wanna go back.

You know, in my years of driving I have yet to pull up beside someone and recieve the "Nod" which means a race is about to occur, nor have I ever asked somebody what they had engine wise.

I'm gonna tell you this, and a bunch of people already know this, but what the hell, I'll say it again. Stock for stock, the difference between a v6 and an 8 is night and day. From a start, mash the peddle on an 8, and mash the peddle on a 6, and see what happens. I drove a 97 F150 supercab with the 4.2 for two years, and I can tell you when I was given the power of a v8 I was as happy as a pig in slop. You boys want a 8, I know you do, I know I did when I got the v6. I hated it, everybody else had a v8, and I couldn't keep up with anybody, not even my friend 92 Sonoma 4x4 with the 4.3 v6. Boy that really pissed me off big time too when that happened. But hey, I do remeber bein able to out run my friends 4 cylinder Ranger, alteast I could take him. Don't get me wrong, the 4.2 is a fine engine, and with some mods can be a fine machine. Like with F150 Freak, he has done a great job with his, but maybe he will agree with me and say that a v6 is no 8, stock for stock.

That is Mudders thoughts on the subject, since I have been there, and done that.

You're so right! I want a V8! NOT!! Although a 4.6 or 5.4 would be nice, I have the Mustang to smack down anything slower than 12.5's, the 4.2 is on standby to take care of anything slower than 14.8's so damn, so it looks like those big burly V8's get cut off at the nuts?! With the exception of a few guys, the V8's are not far fetched game for the 4.2. Sure, stock for stock the 4.6 might have a 2 cyl. (.4L) advantage, but the 4.2 has this M5OD thing that levels the fiels a bit. I have no problem admitting that my truck has whooped up on many a V8 late model F-150's, V6 and a couple V8! chevy's, and a few more, right as it was born. You say the 4.2 is a wonderful engine, it sure is, Kenny Brown shares the same feelings, but do not underestimate the power of the little ol V6, it will come back and bite you......

Yeah sure when i bought my truck i wanted a V8 and tried too trucks with 4.6 and automatic, they were just too expensive so i was just gonna wait and save more money. But the sales person tried talk me into trying a truck with the 4.2 and 5spd, i said hell no! But they showed me a truck that caught my eye,so i tried it. Well to my surprise the V6 actually out did the 4.6 with the auto,so i try it overnight. Well i went and showed it too my cousin and he liked it but wondered why i was getting the V6. He has a 97 Expedition 4X4 Eddie Bauer with the 5.4,so i challenged him too a race. Well to make a long story shorter i beat him on take off and midway through the run,on top end he caught me. Well with my mods its the same story except i beat him all the way because he doesn't have a chip and his top speed limiter kicks in! I love my V6 yes i would have loved a V8 But for 3500 cheaper than a 4.6 and auto i love my 4.2!

well, just to hear my story on this...

I went through every internet dealership site looking for a 4x4 f150 and had no luck until I finally found ONE!! No one told me this one I found in the 14k-18k range was a 6 until I got to lift the hood.

When I finally drove it and had no problems with the power of the engine, I was happy and sold.
I actually tried a 4.6 first and had a chance to drive it around for a while. The truck was a dog, I even tried to get on it a little and the throttle response was lame.

I do want an 8 eventually, but this 6 with the mods kicks ***.. I have no regrets.

I also beat an 8 with the 4x4 package, granted it was a girl driver but I beat her off the line. It was neck and neck for about 500-700 ft, then I heard that airaid really start to suck and I was 1 1/2 trucklengths ahead..

Nice Kill Hotshot!!

p.s. (there was no "nod" that we were racing, I heard her engine rev high, so I did the same )

Actually Ford has shown that a manual 6 versus a 4.6 auto will leave the six a winner. As for the 5.4, highly unlikely. Unless you have one crappy driver and its stick. And if you start putting a reg cab manual, shortbox against a 4x4 supercab longbed manual with a mediocre driver i dunno....

Nice kill hotshot! For those of you that don't believe a 6 can beat the 8's, go to my post a couple of weeks ago "Dusted a Z-71 tonight". In ideal conditions it can be done. Like Hotshot's race, the guy got me off the line, but as I wound it up tight, I caught and passed him.

yep its true, the six can beat the 8 in ideal conditions.Like a supercab 4x4 off road w/5.4 vs a reg cab 2 wheel drive v-6 manual.I used to have the 2wheel drive v-6 and I could beat my buddies v-8 truck I mentioned.pissed him off bad. On another note, I had the pleasure of racing a lightning a couple of days ago in my 4x4 v-6 truck and really got whipped. It is the first lightning I have seen in my town so I had to give a try. Won't be doin that again.lol

Thumbs up

Also, remember that the V6 is over 150 lbs lighter than the V8. That's gotta help acceleration a little.

Well I too can attest that a V-6 can take a V-8.. I got my first kill against my friend who has a Ram regular cab v-8 A 305 I think, could be wrong but I know that it's the 5.2 but it's an automatic...Also I think he's not getting enough backpressure with the exhaust he has on there cause I drove it before and after he got the exhaust done and I noticed a considerable difference but anyway to make a long story short he even has a K&N and I don't...Don't get me wrong I was only about 1/2 a car length ahead when we hit 90 but I still won...besides I like being the underdog..Plus having a v-6 makes for a great excuse if you lose or screw up shifting..lol...Anyway I love my V-6...

Mudder,
With all do respect, I had a '97 4.6 what a piece of recycled junk that was. Traded it for a '97 4.2 and haven't looked back since. Sorry but true.

Guess things are different in Texas. I had one, I damn sure know what reality is. I own a 5.4, and am very happy. Too bad you don't attend rallies with the Texas Chapter, or you might know, and see with your own eyes. My buddy has a 4.2, reg cab 4x2, he was following me up a hill and he could not keep up. He told me on the cb, "damn dude, I gotta get me a Triton". That is what the man said, you can hop on over to F150world.com, and see for your self, those boys over there will set you straight.

Oh well, it's your personal preference, personally it's a bit insane, if you could have any engine in these fine F150's, to want a 6 over an 8, I know I am alot happier with a 8 than a 6. Maybe it's just the fact, THAT I HAD BOTH.

Sorry, but true. It just isn't as powerful, oh well, I am happy.
