V6 with 33's
Anyone tried running 33" tires with the V6 and a stick? I really want to lift my '97 reg cab 4by, but I am worried about a total loss of performance.
Thanks much.
Thanks much.
I have 33's on mine. I also have 4.10 gears. Before the gear change there was a big drop in performance. With the gears I have more performance then before. My advice, if you get 33's get gears with it.

There was a drop in performance with the 33's. But its not too bad. I can drive around everywhere fine, and if you get on the highway with 3.55 and 33's you got gnarly gas mileage. The power stays easily in the drivable range. And with gears being 600 bucks .... of course I'd do it in a second if given an 600 bucks, but other mods first.

I don't know what everyone else is talking about. I can hardly notice the difference. If there were any difference, it would be well worth having these tires. btw, There is no need to lift your 4x4 if all you want is 285's. If fact, you can run 305's with no lift and no rubbing. If you get a lift, go with 35's. But in that case, you would need new gears.

hey, i have 6 inches of lift and 305/70-16 on my V6 2by. the power loss is noticable, but i have never been in a situation where i needed more. you should be fine.

I had a 97 F150 with the 4.2 and drove it for two years. I know dang well there would be a power loss with 33's, especially if I can fill one now with a 5.4. By the way Roland, 285's are 32.8, not 33.1.
The power loss is pretty minimal. My dad use to have 33's on a bronco 2 2.8 and it still had some get up and even pulled a boat. The power loss is no big deal unless you plan on using a lifted truck for nastruck. Do it and you;ll be happy.

By my calculations, it is 33.1, 285/25= 11.4, 11.4*.75 = 8.55, 8.55*2 = 17.1, 17.1+16 = 33.1
My math checks out, how did you calculate 32.8?
BTW, BFG list the diameter as 32.9", So I don't think that either of us are correct. But, manufacture's #s differ slightly anyway.

Well I was looking at the BFG thing at its 32.8 and ive done it numerous times mathematically and its 32.8.
Just do unit conversions..... you had them wrong you divide by 25.4 since there are 2.54 cm to an inch...and thats exact by the way.
285mm -> (28.5 cm) / (2.54 cm/in) * (.75) + 16 which gives us the magic number of 32.8. The width on the BFG's is 11.22 with the correct conversion between millimeters and inches.

I have a 2K 2WD with the 4.2 and a 5spd. I am running 315s which are pretty much 35s. It looks great but now I am comparing prices on 4:10 rear end swap. Its just too much for that little engine to pull but once I get this done, it'll be awesome. Oh, I'm also getting approx. 12-14 on the mpg. Hoping that goes up.

Hi,
I was just quoted 899 dollars for swapping out my rear end for a 4.10. Does that sound fair and would you recommend that an off road shop do it or any trust worthy tranny shop? Is there anything particular that an offroad shop would look for or do differently because I imagine they will be more pricey. Out of the mods you have listed, what (besides gears) would you say gave the best performance gain?
Thanks
Carl
