Synthetic Oil
I am considering the purchase of a 1998 F-150 with the 4.2L V-6. My question is what is the highest mileage you would conider changing to a synthetic oil if it did not run synthetic before? I have heard that synthetic oil on a "high mileage" engine could cause leaks. Any input would help.
there are a lot of threads on this very subject. i think the consensus is that you can do the switch at any time. my experience would certainly suggest that. VW GTI had 60M on it when i switched to synthetic and i got 250M out of the engine.
I have a '97 F-150 STX w/ 4.2 and 3.55 in back. I change my oil between 3k and 4k. I have heard that with synthetic oils that you don't change it as often. How long do you go between changes with synthetic? And what brand should I go with, Mobil 1, Redline, etc.???

It is never to late. It might even make it run better.
All AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oils dramatically outperform conventional petroleum motor oils. They reduce friction, heat and wear for maximum power, performance and fuel efficiency. Resistant to high temperature burn-off, chemical breakdown and sludging -- keeps engines cleaner. Provide low temperature fluidity for fast, dependable winter starts and immediate start-up protection. Exceed the most demanding world-wide performance standards and meet warranty requirements for all domestic and imported passenger car engines, both turbo-charged and non-turbo-charged. Up to 25,000-mile or 1-year drain intervals.
"I just put AMSOIL in my new Toyota at 6,000 miles and the mileage jumped three miles per gallon - a 10 percent increase. I can't understand why everyone doesn't use this fantastic product."

AMSOIL 100% Synthetic 5W-30 Motor Oil is compatible with conventional petroleum oils; however, mixing AMSOIL 5W-30 with a conventional oil will shorten the drain period of AMSOIL 5W-30. Engine oil additives or after-market products are not recommended for use with AMSOIL 5W-30.
