Lightbulb Ram Air Idea

Ram Air!
I was hoping to get some feedback from some people before I attempted this.
I just thought I could cut a couple of holes in the airbox before the filter and attach some rubber hoses. I'm thinking to run them to the bottom of the truck and fashion some scoops out of a couple of funnels. I assume that I'd also need to close off the existing intake hole that runs into the sidewall to prevent the scooped air from running away.
If I get some thumbs up, I'll try to construct the hosing before I go ahead and rip apart my airbox. I already have the K&N Filter (first thing at 5k miles) so hopefully it should work, right?

Plans: Lund hood deflector, superchip, Poweraid, Xenon sport Flares, (custom ram-air idea?)

Thumbs up

That sounds like a good idea, but where are you going to get the air to come in from... there isn't much room at the front of the trucks to put funnels down there, withought them looking ugly.... But try it and let us know...!

hey, i thought about moving the MAF sensor to a position similiar of that to the ram air firebirds, but changing the length of the intake tube, will change the characteristics of the system which would probably screw the computer over,
but if anybody that actually can tell me that it doesnt, then it will be done tommorow

i have done this already. i had it on for about 2 months last year then took it off. the filter gets way too dirty too fast. bugs, big bugs, small bugs, even small rocks. then when it rained i had to stop get out and disconnect it. as far as performance i felt a difference during highway speeds especially at night when it was dry and cool out during the winter months down here. i took it off last december cause it was just a pain in the @#$. good luck maybe you can come up with something better.

Why not try what you see on the racers. They use something like steel window screen to keep the bugs and rocks out, with some 1/4" steel mesh behind it for strength. As far as the water, no clue.

Still haven't done it yet, I have a friend who may have convinced me otherwise. I took a look down there while doing the recent oil chance and I'd have to run one long hose. Looks like a 3" or so could run straight down but I'd have to take it under the radiator to get the the "holes" in the front fender. You know, right next to that darn ugly license plate, those little "intakes". So, If I could run the hose to there and put a cone over it, it'd look good and be functional. I dunno, I'm still in the thinking about it phase

i ran it the front fender from the vent holes in the front bumper next to the liscense plate. when i found rocks in my box i decided to run the hose behind the grill. i used 3 inch hose. i did think of the screens but then i thought about how often i would have to clean them especially down here in florida there are so many bugs. i did do the hole thing at the bottom to drain the water but it realy does not help. the water does not get sucked up in clumps it is like a air-water-bug mixture headed right for your filter. man, like i said pain in the @#$.

Hey can't you just catch all the air from the whole in your bumper and like others said put some mesh up to keep the big stuff out and if water is a problem, get a second less expensive filter to put in the hose before it gets to the k&n this may slow the air down to much. But just think on it.

hey my uncle did this on his 91mustang
ran it to the front foglight holes
with some screens and a setup similar to a drain in ur house (the little j) with a hole in the bottom
it worked great at WOT but at idle it was messing with the computer
made it idle real rough
i think he got 1/10 of a second off of it

I also had an idea. I dont have much money to work with so I made my own high flow air intake and modified the mass airflow. I have notice better response and better gas millage. The change over cost me $15.00 and a new K&N filter priced 43.00. My email has changed to aakpyt@aol.com if any questions or requesting a picture.

my biggest concern was with the water. Granted, I live in Southern California so rain isn't much of an issue but I know it could damage the maf. If the hose is running vertically to the airbox, would cutting a small hole in the box allow water to drain.
I hadn't considered the plithera of things that could be "sucked" into the box. Thanks hut. A couple well placed screens should do the trick.
How about the hose placement? Does anyone agree/disagree that it would work well running it to the front fender?
For those of you who have done this, how was it set up?

I'm not really looking to get a whole lot of performance out of the setup. Mostly, I'd like the better fuel mileage as we all do. I figured, at highway speeds, the extra air might just add a little extra umph and let the rmp's relax a little.

Sounds like the ram air, although much desired (I could tell people, yeah it has ram air), just might not be worth it. Perhaps I'll just chop open the box. I can run the same hose, just to the open box, giving me cooler air. maybe an extra horse or two.

P.S. Thanks everyone so far for the replies
