Cool My JBA headers are installed!

I'm really glad I decided to be one of the first test subject on the JBA headers. They showed up yesterday on my doorstep. It took a week for them to get here. I installed them right away. So far here are the results. The instructions are not good. There are no pictures. For me, I like pictures. It took me about 7 hours to install. They were a pain in the a$$. As for you guys who have done this project before on other vehicles. You know that every header install is a pain in the ***. So no difference with JBA. I used all the existing mounting hardware. They came with their own if you want to use that. I did not like the gasket they supplied with them. The whole size on the gasket was a lot smaller then the one on the headers. I could have just cut them bigger. I decided to use the ones already on my truck. They are stainless steel. My truck is almost brand new so I could get away with it. The old gaskets fit better then the ones they supplied. In the instructions they don’t say anything about a high temp seal compound. I used some anyway. The only real problem I ran into during this installation was the oil dipstick. It is very easy to take out. Once you have the headers in, it is very hard to get it back in. OK, now this is what you have been waiting for... THE RESULTS! I like to say first that during the install time I took the neg battery terminal off. This is so the computer can relearn with the new Mod. Also, your results may very depending on the mods you have. Look at my signature. If you have similar mods then you will have similar results. I started the vehicle up. I let it warm up for about a half-hour checking for any leaks. I had none! I was excited now. Now for the test-drive. I have a lot quicker throttle response. I know some of you were worried about this because of backpressure. Worry no more. The difference in feel is like when I first got my superchip. It was a lot. The headers are they same way. I really notice the difference at wide open throttle. It feels a lot better. This sucker is really breathing now! The sound has not changed much. It does sound throatier, but not much. I' am very pleased with the results. It gave me that kick in the pants I wanted. My truck only has about 5 miles on it since the install. My computer needs about 50 miles before its back to normal. So that means it will only get better. I have Mike T working on a custom chip for me. He said on one of his posts that he could work a couple more ponies out of the headers. Overall, I am very pleased. Oh well, I will never be finished with my truck. And that’s the way I like it.

woohoo sounds great Tuscon!! Soon as I get my tax refund, I know where it's goin =)

what about tightening the headers up? don't they loosen or something and ya gotta check em every week or so for the first month? I guess if ya stick with the stock gaskets you'd be okay with the high temps..

great news man!

Patrick,

Yes, they say to retighten as needed. I don’t think they will start to leak. I did a lot to prevent that. If I am wrong I will have to get down there and put some more torque on there. Oh by the way. The stock nuts and bolts came off very easy. I was so glad because I hate dealing with stubborn bolts.

Icon, JBA is the only company I know of that has headers for this truck. They just released them. I was worried about the warranty issue to. I did find out that "no" they will not void your warranty. There is some kind of "Act" that protects us. Someone else here can probably explain on that better than I can.

Taxman, The jacobs did not give me any noticable Hp gain. It did give me a quicker throttle response and better MPG. With all the mods I have, I have eliminated the slow start. My engine used to have to rev up before it took off. Now with an auto trans I can do a burn out. It maybe only a foot, but hey, its still a burn out.

Thumbs up

Tucson,
Thanks for the report on the headers! Which cat-back exhaust are you running on your truck?
Thanks!

Hi TucsonTruck,

We've been a bit busy, but I wanted to just drop by your thread and congratulate you on the installation of your headers!

By the way, you are correct, the headers will *not* void your warranty, and it's the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act that protects your rights, just so you'll know.

Once we've got it tuned for all your mods, the 4.10 gears, the 33" tires, the headers, and everything else, that should be one sharp-running V-6 F-150.

Congraulations too on having a unique truck, we love to see people doing more mods to these V-6's!

Surf, I have a Dynomax Catback exaust. Mike, thanks for the reply. I know, I can hardly wait to have my superchip reprogramed for my truck. Maybe you can have me down to the low 13's in the quater mile. Lol, I can wish can't I? Maybe if I put a lighting motor in it.

Question

Tucson, You are a lucky man, and have a great truck. One question, do you or someone else know, if those JBA headers will work on a '97 STX? I am so tired of everyone beating me off the line. I put my foot into it, and it feels like mud. Anything to get into the power band of this engine faster.

mthoward91, Go to there web site
http://www.jbaheaders.com/
They say 97-2000. So they will fit on your truck. Don't buy from them. They want a lot more money then Truckperformance.com
They sell them for a lot less
