351
I'm thinking of buying a 2k F-150 with th V6 stick in it. Because of my financial situation right now, I can't go bigger. But I've been scheming about after I have paid this truck off, to put a 351 in it. Will it fit? Do I need a new tranny, and such? I've got a few years to get the plans straight, but I thought I'd ask now.
I've seen some 97+ F150's with 351 V8 in it. The people usually go with carbs. But those are show trucks. Some even install solid axles in front. I think you would save money if you sold your truck and bought a used one with a V8. I'm not sure but the 5.4 isn't a 351???? But one thing for sure your 5-speed mazda transmission will NOT fit the 5.4!!! You will need to switch tranny too.
why not just buy a 5.4 now? if it is for financial reasons just wait till you have to have custom parts made for the swap. i know of no one who makes a kit for dropping a 351 (5.8 liters) into a 97 up f-150.
5.4 is smaller than the 351. I think the 351 works out to be about 5.9 L or so. I was thinking of putting a 5.4 in it and a manual from a super-duty (gotta have the stick). That oughta handel the power, right?
I've got an answer for the why not 5.4. The 5.4 is a modular type engine with EFI. The 5.8, being carbeurated is a heck of alot cheaper to build and put in, and it produces more power to boot. I have a friend that works for Ford racing and he told me he could build me a 5.8 for about $1300 while a 5.4 new would be almost $2000. Thats not including tranny switch and custom work. The other reason is because the 5.8 is not really a 5.8. Its more like a 289 bored over to a 351. That reduces the cost some more and makes it alot easier to finance.

hey mav07 i also live in the houston area, were are you going to pass inspection with a carbarated 351 in a 97 truck. impossible to bore a 289 to a 351. in the 5.0 world there are people who sell kits to make a 302 into a 347. custom crank and piston alon would be more than $1300. the 351 block is different than the 302, 289 block.
i really dont think you understand all the time, expense involved in such a swap. start off at the gas tank, what are you going to do with the in-tank electric fuel pump, way too much pressure for a carbarator, does it bolt up to the trans and by the way, the computer runs the trans so what about that? wiring harness? which oil pan will fit the 97 engine bay? exhaust mods as this is not a direct bolt in? custom a/c brakets, the list goes on.

For those that don't already know, the 5.4L engine is actually 329cid. Not sure if the block is the same or not.

Mav and others - the 289, 302, 351 and 400 all share the same 4" bore. The 351W is a stroked (not bored) 289, and the longer stroke requires a taller block. Other versions of the 351 (the C and the M) have further differences from the 289/302 in block and head design. The 351M is more closely related to the old 400 'small' block and has an even taller block than the 351W.
Those custom 347 stroker versions of the 302 are also generally over-bored to 4.060" to get up to 347. Expensive but pretty cool if you want to stick with a 302 size block.
The 351W, M, or C can be tuned to put out more power than a stock 5.4, but they are older technology and when hopped up they tend to get much worse fuel mileage and probably pollute a lot more.

A 351 is a 5.8L, a 5.4L is a 330, as a 350 is a 5.7L. a 302 is a 5.0L.
