4.10 gears.... yah or nay?
I'm new to working on vehicles and really now nothing on nothing
, i know specs and quarter mile times and i also know that i want to get 4.10 gears so my truck has a little more go when i gas it. question is, what side affects would i run into if i get the gears on my truck with a v6? will my tranny hold up to it or no...
please help

I think the tranny would probably hold up, but, your driving style, judging by your earlier posts, will probably hurt you gas mileage. Instead of spinning 2000 RPM at ~72, you are gonna do it at around 61 mph. So, your jaunts at around 80+, you're gonna be probably over 3 grand, and you're gonna pay at the pump, so to speak. However, if you don't care about the mileage, and you just want to get off the line in a hurry, then the 4.10s would probably help. Good luck on getting the speedo recalibrated.
Oh, and, if you're looking for performance, I would suggest you look at a suprechip first. More grunt all around, better shifting from an auto (can't remember if you had one), and, they can probably compensate for the 4.10. However, unless you have a limited slip rearend, you aren't likely to keep that power on the ground. Truck=light rear end. Light rearend-limited slip = spinning right rear wheel. Spinning right rear= shorter tire life + no get up and go.
Just a thought or two.

to answer on your post. I placed my order for mikes superchip a week ago. i do have an automatic. i am worried about mpg. and my right rear tire is getting pretty bald right about now, so i guess i don't have limited slip.
can i goto the dealer and have them replace my rearend and get a limited-slip put on...?

AFAIK, the dealer won't do it for you, unless he's feeling really nice. There are kits (Although I don't know how good they are) that will effectively convert a conventional rear-end into a limited slip. I have seen a few, though, I don't know much about them. Otherwise, since this is a fairly popular application, there are actually several aftermarket rear-ends that can be purchased, as well as ford parts themselves. The only thing, of course, is several things, like your speedo, will need to be recalibrated.
As for mpg, you will loose some going to 4.10, there's no doubt, especially if you do any driving above 40 mph. Limited slip won't hurt it, but, it could cause wet weather traction problems. The chip supposedly has a side effect of slightly improved mileage, though, if you read all the posts, not everyone sees that. If you are concerned about mileage, then, keep your revs below 2000 RPM as often as possible, which means driving below 72 MPH on the highway, and being a bit leisurely taking off from stoplights. Most performance upgrades done to your engine, short of new injectors or a blower, actually improve your mileage (unless you like to keep your foot in it more as a result of more power) so that's also something to look at. Your gas mileage is more a function of your driving style than anything else.
For me, babying my truck in the city, I get 15.9. Ragging it out hard gets me ~13.4 Same truck, same city, same weather, same gas station, same pump, same grade. Just a fact of life.
Oh, and if you want real performance, and yet, real economy, keep your 3.55 gears, get the LS kit, and invest in a 50/75/100 shot of nitrous and a flip chip from Superchips. All the power you want, when you want it, and all the economy you can get, when you want that as well.
My .03 cents.

I have decided on not putting on the 4.10 gears, since i do alot of driving above 70mph. i'm not worried about my milage though, i can't hardly keep it under 2k rpm at all. the best i've ever gotten on milage was 14.2 and that was on highway doing 90mph the whole way, other than that i see an average of 12-13mpg. haha.
i am interested in the conversion kit though, i would like to get more grip to the tires(even though they are hard to peel out on with da v6).
