Question Towing w/ 4.2 and 5 spd and 3.55's

Has anyone towed 5000lbs w/ this engine combo and been sucessful ,I need to tow my 5.0 race car w/ a tandem axle trailer ,fully loaded the 2 together will be close to this weight. The owners manual says max. 3200 lbs max as I have a 1998 f150 4x4 4.2 w/ 5 spd and 3.55's.The owners manual also rates the auto version considerably higher.
I'm not going long distance or any great hills ,just wanting know how many have been successful and what kind of wieght you tow,thx for your responses

Good question. I will be attempting the same thing but I will be hauling the stang to Pheonix, AZ from Oklahoma City, OK. Check sig for truck info....

It should be able to do it.Just take it easy. These v-6s are capable motors.I wouldn't recommend going over 60 mph or so.
The most I have ever towed was 3000lbs in a 98 w/4.2 and 3.08 rear end. Acceleration was sluggish but after I got up to speed it was all good.

We towed my brothers 93 5.0 to a Mustang show using a ridiculously heavy tandem axle trailer. The show was only about 10 miles from the house but it had a new suspension on it(night before job) and hadnt been aligned yet. But anyways it did fine, just dont baby the clutch off the line.

I towed a friends car on a Uhaul trailer. it was the type of trailer that the car drives up on. i towed it about 40 miles in rush hour traffic. it did just fine. this was before my K&N airfilter and exhaust. now with the exhaust it will probably will do much better.
hope this helps

I just pulled a U-Haul car hauler with 4000 lbs of Toyota and parts on it more than 300 miles over 2 high mountain passes. This is the third similar trip with trailers this month as I have just moved.
It was pretty slow up some of the 10% grades. The temp gauge didn't move. The truck handled it fine. Backing up nearly needed low range though to preserve the clutch. Make sure your trailer has brakes at this weight. I doubt that the rear end would live forever doing this on a regular basis.

Oh yeah, that was 4000 lbs plus the 2000 lb trailer for a total of 6000lbs. I bet the other U-Hauls I pulled down here had pretty much the same weight in them also.

I pulled an 18' 5th wheel camping this summer with no problems, it weighed 3600#. I also made a one way pull of a 25' 5th wheel trailer to a campsite, a distance of 100 miles and no problems. That trailer weighed 6000# with a pin weight of 1000#. My concern was parking them or backing them up, it doesn't take long that you can smell the clutch if you ride it at all. I don't think occasionally over maxing them will hurt but if it is gonna be a routine I'd get a bigger engine.

Cool

Thx for the responses.I'm upgrading the clutch to a centreforce dual-friction it has a 90% greater clamping force so that should add to help the problem ,I won't be towing all the time maybe once a month during the spring and summer and no really great distances yet maybe 100 miles at the most no great hills

Tell you what ,how about we both load up our cars on trailers and we can race the trucks towing the stangs ,that way you would have a better chance ,hehehehe.
