Question Power Options

I own a 99' 4.2L V6 4x4 regular cab shortbed flareside and I want more power. I'm not concerned with the sound, just horsepower. I was thinking of going with an airaid intake and a gibson exhaust, has this combo worked for anyone? How does the gibson compare to the flowmaster? I hear gibson is better. Is the Airaid a good system? (I have never heard of them before) I know K&N makes good systems but aparently not for the V6.

the airraid and gibson upgrades compliment each other nicely might want to consider a superchip also. it can be programmed for the increase in air flow you will have with these two upgrades

Wink

Right on, thanks for the tip, I have a manual transmission, does the chip do the same for the manual as it does for the automatic. What should I expect to pay?

Another way to gain* power is to lower your gear ratio to 4.10 or 4.30. i say gain* because your enigne will still have the same power just its applying more of it to the ground.

Hi WhiteRider,

Those Airaid kits work very well on the 4.2 V-6, we highly recommend them! It will add about 10 more horsepower at the flywheel, and is available here in the F-150 Online Store.

The question you asked about whether the Superchip is effective for the manual-transmission vehicles is a question that comes up fairly often, and a good one! The answer is, the power gain in the engine at the flywheel is the same in these vehicles regardless of which transmission you have, the difference is that with a manual we of course can't firm up the shift characteristics.

You will get more of that power gain to thr rear wheels in your manual, as the manuals only eat up about half the horsepower to turn the drivetrain as the automatics do, 60-65 hp on the automatic V-6 vs. about 32-35 hp for the manuals.

For exact pricing please contact us privately, as the Webmaster here prefers to keep that stuff off the message boards. Our email & phone number are below, and we also have an online ordering system right here on F-150 Online, which you can access by clicking on the link just below in my signature line.

Please feel free to give us a shout, and we'll be happy to go over all the details with you so you can give it some thought.
