4.2L auto is dog slow
i am sure you all know this but the 4.2l auto supercab is horribly slow... i went to the rally in va beach and ran a 18.647.. i think the tractor cleaning the track could have beat me.... maybe it's time for a lightning..has anyone else run their trucks,,i would like to see how my time compares to other 4.2's

Lew - what gears do you have? IMO the dreaded 3.08 gears should be illegal in the SC V6 auto, especially with the bigger 255 tires. Just too slow. A change to 3.55 or even to 4.10 would make a big difference.
I agree with dirt bike dave. With our v-6 the gearing is critical. My truck is no speed demon and I have the 3.55 and the 255/70 tires. If I decide to keep this truck for a while I want to put 4.10 gearing in it.

If you decide to hang onto your 4.2, try a Superchip. Had one in the 4.2 I had, and it made a world of difference. Low-end throttle response improved greatly--truck jumped off the line. Mike (Superchips_distributor) can change around your shift points, too. I got a custom chip from him that helped out the towing performance.
i have the 3.08 gears, i will probably get chipped soon, i really like the hiway performance, the truck will move once it gets going...i go 90+ on the interstates all the time..

Ummm... not sure I'd advertise that!!
You will be impressed with the chip and the gear swap... but I'll warn you--a Dodge V8 is still quicker from 0-(some undetermined speed--I shut her down because we were in town.) I did outrun one uphill one day, tho'... top speed kinda stuff... just before the cop came whizzing up from behind... We got lucky on that one... he stopped the guy in front of us... :-)

i have yet to hit the speed limiter yet but i havent pushed much over 90...consistently at 90-93 but not much more..on a recent trip to savannah i was running with some trucks and got to close to 95 but backed off when the wife woke up....didnt do bad averaged about 16 mpgs on the trip,, not to bad for a supercab, auto and a family of four in the truck ( oldest stayed home probably partied the whole time )

Hi Lew,
Actually, since I've seen your truck (at the Rally, thanks for coming!) and how heavy it is, I think your time was excellent given how much that 4.2 has to pull around, especially with 3.08 gearing!!
The 4.2 V-6 is particularly weak below 2500 rpm, but once it's past that point, does a decent job with a 205 hp output stock, not bads for it's size, actually. But combine that with a heavy truck and 3.08 gearing, and it has just too much work to do to give "spirited" performance. But that can be fairly easily taken care of.
BTW, you did an excellent job of staging at the strip!

Mike, my brother just got himself his first Ford !!
1998 F-150 Supercab, shortbox with the 4.2L. I mentioned to him about the K&N FIPK for it and he said that they didn't make one for it. Now he just checked one place out BUT hey Mikey knows all right. Can you tell me if K&N does make one for the 4.2L or will the 4.6L FIPK work it as well ??
Have Fun & Keep on Truckin'

P.S. - I've told him about the site whether he has been here or not is up to him.
