4.2L power
I also have a 4.2L in a 97 XL Supercab with 84k miles. It is really weak on takeoff and hills. It usually has to shift down and out of overdrive on a sizeable hill empty, except for me. I have a K&N filter and modified airbox and dual outlet muffler but no other modifications. I'd rather not mess with the gears and wonder if the Superchip will be helpful enough with no other work.
Well, gears could have been the single easiest thing to increase the power being applied to the wheels especially if you have the 3.08 gears and/or larger than stock tires. At about 600 they are pretty pricy but theres no substite. Cause i got to Chevs pretty much the same one with 4.10 one with something lower and Wow what a difference that makes. Which is why im changing mine to 4.10s...ot to mention the bigger tires.

Hi Bartruth,
Sometime you'll have to tell us how you picked that screen name, sounds interesting!
The 4.2 V-6 is a bit weak below 2500 rpm, and after that it has a nice 205 hp output stock, it just doesn't have the torque the V-8's do.
The Superchip will help, as it will add 25 hp & 31 lbs./ft. of torque at the flywheel. One of the nicest aspects in my opinion is the fact that it adds power at any throttle position, so it increases torque on part-throttle, which helps the vehicle's response and overall driveability.
Please feel free to give us a shout if you'd like to go over all the details and exactly what it will do for your vehicle, so you can give it some thought before making your decision, we're happy to help.
Good luck with your truck,
