Recall Work and Leak Damage
I have a 97' 4.2 6cyl. On June 5th it's going in for the recall leak of the coolant. I told the tech that it's only a small puddle in the mornings, but he said and I've read here that it may have damaged the motor. HOW DO I KNOW?...IF I NEED a new one. hOW CAN i CHECK AND MAKE SURE THEY AREN'T GOING TO PUSH ME THROUGH, AND HAVE IT BREAK DOWN THE ROAD?...thanks.....the truck has 81,000.
Please Help, work is going to be done soon!!!

One way to protect yourself is, before they do the work, take a sample of your engine oil and have it tested in a lab to see if there is any anti-freeze in it. Might cost you $20 or so.
If you want, take the sample at the dealership doing the work so a service rep sees where the oil came from and that you're not someone to be jerked around with.

If you have antifreeze in your oil you will know it, because with even a small amount it will cause the engine to lock up. For some reason it causes piston pins to sieze.

Ok guys,
If you have coolant in the oil, it will form a thick, milky substance.
The engine will only lock if coolant enters the cylinders because you cannot compress a liquid. The coolant will, however decrease the effectiveness of the oil, increases wear and may cause bearings to seize. Either way, it's not a good thing.
I have never seen a leak dump a couple of gallons of coolant into the crankcase. It USUALLY does not get that far.
