Does anyone with a 4.2 have problems with a rough idle? It is incosistent and seems to happen when the truck is driven more than 20 or so miles. It feels like its going to stall and when I take off from a stop it stutters.

Here is a letter I sent to Ford in hopes of a response. Has anyone else experienced this type of problem?

I am writing this e-mail because I am having engine problems with my F-150. My truck idles very roughly after it has been driven for about 20 miles and continues to do so until I reach my destination. It is very inconsistent though- sometimes it will idle rough when I am stopped and then other times it idles fine. At times it feels as if it is going to stall and then when I take off from a stop, it feels very sluggish for a few seconds until it picks up speed.

I have had it into Mills Ford in Anaheim, California on three separate occasions to try and remedy the problem while under factory warranty. The first visit they said nothing was wrong. The second visit they had me pay for a fuel filter and labor but the problem did not go away. The third time they kept it overnight and replaced the IAC valve (I had to pay for a rental car) and still no improvement. I now have 55k on the truck and it seems to be getting worse and appears to be happening more frequently. I continually promote your truck as I belong to an F-150 club, but I am getting extremely discouraged with Ford because they failed to fix it while it was under warranty.

As a valued customer of Ford I would greatly appreciate some assistance in getting this fixed once and for all. I do not feel I should have to put out any out of pocket expenses, as it should have been fixed while under warranty!

Thank you for your consideration in this matter. Your decision will influence whether or not I continue be an F-150 enthusiast and promote your product.

Sincerely,

Mike Lashley

F150 Idle Problem Fixed?

Hey Big Mike, I was reading your board tonight and I am having the same problems with my V-6. I was wondering if you have solved your problem and if so what did you end up doing? Thanks

Thumbs down Brand new V-6 runs rough at idle

I am also experiencing a rough idle at times when the truck is idling. Has Ford fixed this for anyone? If so what was the cause?
My truck has done this since day one and only does it about once a month. It currently has 4000 miles on it.

I remember a guy posted a while back with the same problem. Turns out the wires to the O2 sensor were crossed. The fact that your getting poor gas mileage and that it does it after 20 or so miles makes me think its some kind of problem with the O2 sensors. Just a thought.

JRF150 I think that is what is wrong with mine. The problem only happens at startup. Do you know if Ford is acknowledges the problem, or what I can do to get it fixed?

Have any of you tried to change your oxygen sensors (2 upstream, 2downstream) to remedy the rough idle? It seems that was the problem I was experiencing. Once I changed all four of them, the truck ran fine without any further idling problems. I get 15-16 mpg now that I have the new sensors.

I've had both problems!

I guess I am the lucky one since my truck has had both problems on my 97:

When my truck was new, up until about 15,000 miles I had the random rough idle at cold start just like you all are describing. The problem magically disappeared whenever I switched air filter brands to Deutch (at Autozone). Don't know if it was the filter or maybe I closed it tighter than it was before.

Right now at 83,000 (and for the past 30,000) miles I am experiencing the exact same rough idle when at a stop sign after a long trip. It would be very helpful to know the fix to this one as it gets annoying at times.
