Question V6 redline?

My 4.2 (I guess) redlines at about 5000 rpms. Does anyone know how i can raise my redline? What kind of emgine modifications can i do to get 6500 or 7000 rpms out of it?

Dear LowBlo,

Raising the redline itself has to be done in the computer's programming, as the ECU controls those parameters.

Unless you're willing to spend thousands of dollars ($5000-$6000 for openers including machine work)on a built-to-the-hilt motor, you're never going to see 6500-7000 rpm from that engine, realistically.

Even NASCAR's Busch series cars, which used to use V-6's stopped doing that and went to V-8's, as they never could get the reliability up where they needed it to be at those power levels in the V-6's.

It's always best to stay within what is actually feasible with your engine. The 4.2 V-6 can be built up to have an acceptable level of power for most people. Looking at your signature line, it looks like you have a very nice lowered truck!

You're best bet to get really significant power levels from that motor is going to be supercharging it. There is a project going on right now that we are involved in, where exactly that has been done, a custom supercharger has been installed on a 1999 4.2 V-6, and has gone thru numerous rounds of tuning & testing to dial in the combination. Informal testing has so far shown (and this is on a 4X4, mind you) 0-60 times of very close to 7 seconds flat, with potential for even quicker times, once it's dialed in properly.

So if you're really looking for a lot of power from that engine, you might want to think about supercharging rather than trying to turn it 7000 rpm. As long as you keep the rpm's down, you can add a *lot* of performance by supercharging.

To turn 7000 rpm relibly, you're talking about forged steel crank & rods, forged pistons, serious cylinder head porting, serious valvetrain reconfiguration, reconfiguring the oil return orifices, and a lot of other work, all of it expensive. And if you're an automatic, the transmission is going to need modification to turn those kinds of rpms as well. So while it *could* be done, you'd be better of just supercharging it, in my humble opinion. With proper tuning and keeping boost levels sane, you can use the stock bottom end of that motor and have it live.

It all gets down to just exactly how you really want to achieve your desired level of performance. What you posted *could* be done, but it wouldn't be what I would suggest to get top-shelf performance from that engine, in that vehicle.

Good luck with your truck,
