I change my oil every 3k to 3.5k. It might seem like a waste of money, but it certainly isn't going to hurt anything. I think it's a great way to know your engine is staying as clean as can be. I pay about $30.00 every 3 months. $10 a month for oil doesn't seem bad to me.

I have to agree with both of your post.

Even though my MPG is about 5 MPG's better in my 4.6, its a lighter truck with no lift and stock sized tires.

I change my oil every 4k miles, keeps the motor running better. After so much time you will start to build sludge.

Update: After driving several F150's, including another V6, a V8 4WD, and a GMC Sierra, I ended up buying a Ram. Quad Cab, 06 model, 2wd, with a 4.7.

Had fewer miles than the V6 F150 I originally mentioned in this post, is a newer model, and is a much bigger truck overall. Did I mention that the Ram is big. I don't know what else the Ram has going for it over the Ford or GMC, but, it is a big roomy truck.

And while the 4.2 was not a powerhouse in the 150, neither is the 4.7 in the Quad Cab Ram. But, as I mentioned, I was looking for a grocery getter and kid picker-up-er, not a heavy hauler or tow vehicle. So, now we basically have another 4 door car that happens to have a truck bed.

Hopefully, it will be a good, reliable vehicle. I like it so far.

I have a '99 4.2 2WD regular cab auto w/3.55. Best I've ever seen is about 17mpg, and get about 8 or 9 towing small (3200lb) travel trailer. Of course, it has about 260,000 miles on it, but runs great and doesn't use any oil. When I bought it 3 years ago, it got 12 mpg and ran rough when cold, but I fixed that by removing Bosch plugs and replacing with Motorcraft. Maybe newer trucks will get better mileage?

Mine is spot on with the manufacturer sticker 14/20, although I've gotten as high as 21.5 hwy with keeping speeds below 65, which isn't very often. A 50/50 mix city/hwy will probably give you around 14-16 mpg on most days. I have noticed a pretty good drop in mpg during the coldest months, on average of 2-3 mpg. My last truck was a scab '06 4WD, and was probably 2 mpg worse on fuel, not really significant. If your looking for mileage in a truck you need to move down to a mid-size with the 2.3 or 3.0, manual trans is even more economical. These trucks are heavy, and have alot of rolling mass to get going.

I only see a few mpg difference between my '99 4.2 reg cab 4X4 (13-15 mpg) and my '03 7700 5.4 scab 2wd (12-14 mpg). Bottom line is that it takes a lot of fuel to move a heavy truck ... it doesn't matter all that much how many cylinders you're dumping it through.

My 08 f150 v6 with an auto and regular cab will average right around 21-22 mpg with 50-50 driving highway and city. On the highway I average about 70-72 mph. I'm very happy with it as my last truck would rarely see 16 mpg.

apparently in 2000 ford changed the computer to run more efficient in their trucks. i knew someone who had a truck like yours and he only got 18mpg while babying it and not going over 55mph.

i think this is the best answer so far.

my last truck, my 04 heritage, was getting consistant 22.5mpg with my K&N intake. and that was maybe 70% highway. my 08 is definitely less but still gets good mileage. at 65-70 i would guess 21-22 since it got about 18.5 at 85mph

My 1999 F-150 w/5Spd and K&N intake, Michelin LTX-MS, Mobil 1, bed cover (tonneau)) gets 15+/- local driving, 12 miles to town, putz around, come back and the like. In Ohio and Kentucky making the run from Michigan to North Carolina it gets 20-21 running 70-75. This has been the case for 120,000 miles. Not sure of ratio, but it accelerates OK and pulls grades well, so I'm guessing 3.55. It sure beats my old '85 V8 which could get 13 or so on a good day!

timmy, for the third time- ford didnt change anything in their engines. HP/TQ and mileage ratings are all dependant on REAL WORLD FIGURES. a hilly country with crappy gas and a humid day will have a 4.2L @ 150 hp and 15 mpg but put it in a level, cool climate the next and it could be 180hp @ 21 mpg. Again, nothing changes

Here's the best tips:

1. Choose a 3.55 axle.
2. Choose a 5 speed manual.
3. Choose 4x2.
4. Have genuine Motorcraft plugs and wires.
5. Run 5w20 oil with a clean filter every 3k miles.
6. Check brakes for sticking calipers, wheel bearings, and rotate the tires.
7. Choose highway tires. Not off road tires.
8. Run good quality fuel.
9. Stay out of 3k rpms.
10. Predict traffic flow and drive it like you are driving a big-rig.

Just be easy on it, and it will be easy on your wallet.
1.) Check
2.) Check
3.) Check
4.) Check
5.) Check
6.) Check
7.) Check
8.) Check
9.) Kinda...
10.) Check

I'm getting 10/13
