running rough
spark plug wires are correct, made sure of that a while ago just in case, I am going to check the compression with the lifters out.. this should leave all the valves closed for sure correct? seems this should eliminate that as a possible cause
if its still low then i suppose its either head gasket, leaky valves or rings?
the engine does not run hot, no water or oil mixing anywhere.. the compression also does not leak down on the two low compression cylinders
either way I guess time will tell, lifters should be in tomorrow but im not sure when ill pull it back apart, by the way.. can the intake gaskets be reused? I dont think its a good idea to reuse them, but eh I dont know a lot about these engines

A compression test with out the lifters in place will yeild nothing. If the intake valve can't open then there will be nothing to compress (air).
And yes a bad lifter could affect the compression readings, they should still come up but it would take more pumps to get there. Because the valve won't open as much or stay open as long as it should you dont get the volume you need.

pulled out all the stops once I finally found time to tear into this engine, complete top end gasket set, new valves/springs/lifters/push rods etc.
once I got the drivers side head off I saw the gasket between 5-6 was black, not burnt in two yet but the material was separating, took the heads to get them checked and everything was fine, had all the new bits installed at the shop
put everything back on the truck and fired it up, runs perfect now.. idles so smooth I cant tell its running, truly amazed at how big the difference is, it does not even sound like the same truck from the exhaust note
replaced the pre-cats with pipe as well and I have a flowmaster 40 series to replace the factory muffler which has something rattling inside of it, also replaced the "big tires" with the factory wheels/tires, all in all I am now officially happy with my truck
even if it is a PITA getting the heads off and back on, annoying retorque procedure as well
thanks to those that helped
