Help: 1998 V6 engine knock (video)

we've got a friend of a friend that brought us this truck at work. 4.2L 5spd 1998 all stock. 110,000 on the ticker.

Loud engine knock, deep inside the engine.

Here's what we've done so far:
  • Belt removed
  • Pulled each wire off the coil pack individually no change in sound
  • No SES or codes present
  • sound stays with clutch applied in N or driving

This guy is on a very limited budget, can't pay to keep towing it places. Trying to figure out what the next step is besides tearing it all apart just to find out we need a long block

Thanks guys
-Patrick

well we started to do a compression check to see how the engine performs, and well pulled out original spark plugs (original wires too) and we found some coolant in #1 cylinder, atleast i think its #1.... Its front on passenger side.

we are gonna dry everything off, reassemble, run it and if the noise is gone im gonna do a lower intake gasket on it, and if it still is noisy with everything dried out it will probably need a new engine

I agree. Not good in any case, especially with the coolant found in a cylinder.

yea like i said the owner has no money, and we are trying everything we can to make sure that it doesnt need an engine before we condemn it. I hate to shotgun an engine and just make him eat it....

do you know what normal 4.2 compression should be at off the top of your head Quintin?

No, but 210 psi sounds good. Pull all the plugs and check the entire engine, make sure you've got a stout battery so you get even and consistent cranking speed, and block the throttle wide open while you're testing. You shouldn't see any more than a 10-15% difference between cylinders.

The front pass cylinder should be the #4, #1 is front driver side.

When did they change that? #1 has been front passenger side on Fords ever since I remember.
