Never heard of Stoyger(unless you mean Troyer and its just a typo) performance package. If you mean troyer then the package he offers is one that he has tested to make sure the parts work well with each other to give you more HP/TQ. I got the Stage 1 kit from them(minus the exhaust) for the 97-98 F150 4.2 and I have nothing but good thiings to say about it.

If you did me Stoyger then ignore what I just said

Knocking or pinging under load:

1.) incorrect grade of fuel
2.) bad timing
3.) carbon build up
4.) incorrect spark plugs/gap
5.) malfunctioning fuel system

I don't know about the knock but you might make sure the MAF is plugged in. On my old truck I forgot to plug it in and when I put one on my current truck, guess what, I forgot to plug it in as well. LOL. Ran like crap both times.

please anyone correct me if i am wrong. i probably am but the 4.2L is a stroked 3.8L like in a V6 mustang. it is the same bore, just longer stroke. so i think you can use performance parts for a 3.8L on your 4.2L as long as there is space for it to be put there. i think headers are one issue in the not enough space dept.
