89 firebirds dont have PATS. different make/model/yeah could've been $10 or $1000. for a ford dealer to do a PCM flash for a PATS cluster, its $75-$100

press and hold the trip button , turn your key to ON. DONT START IT after you turn it to on, keep holding the button in until it says TEST(should be about 5 seconds). once it says test, release the button and press it as many times as it takes till it says tac 0000 or tach 0000. and start your truck, do not turn key back before starting. got straight from ON to START. after it is started it will read tach XXXX(it is numerical tach, it will be displaying your rpms and you will probably not be able to read the last two digits from the constant changing in engine speed.) if it does not work, you are doing something wrong. when the weather gets warmer(10 degrees F now) i will make a video of how to do it for everyone. i have done it on my 04 heritage and my 08. does not matter if it has an analog tach or not, it will be on there.
My 02 has it, it will even tell me how many miles I can go before I run out of fuel.

^ I think you just mean the normal one that isn't under the test mode. The test mode in my 08 has mph. kph, bulb and gauge check, fuel pressure, tach, and like 30 more things but does not have mpgs or anything to do with gas mileage or how long til empty. I think you are talking about the normal mode but on a higher up optioned truck.

Tacometer in 2002 F150

If you can bring up a tac in your digital dash, which you can. Then there must be a way to hook up a real tac. The problem is knowing where to wire it in. I have read that it goes to the PCM on wire #48 "white with a pink stripe."
Problem is there is no White with pink stripe wire on my 2002.

Or you can buy a tach that has an inductive pickup to clamp around a spark plug wire.

Yes i have heard that too but that is too much for me to want to do or mess with anything on the pcm.. inductive pickup would have its own way of picking up the rpms and would not be connected to your trucks computer. It counts how many sparks per minute the spark plug makes by a clamp over one of the spark plug wires. Usually they have a switch on the back to switch between the number of cylinders it will work with. I had a ieqquus tach or something close to that. It had an option for 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 cylinders. I had it on my 04 heritage f150 4.2l and it worked great. I hooked it to 2 toggles, one for power, one for backlight. Then I sold it to my friend with a 01 Hyundai accent (when I traded in my 04 for my 08) and it worked great on his too.
