My uncle has a 03 f150 ext cab with the V6 Automatic. He bought it brand new and only does oil changes and transmission fluid, just the bare basics. It has about 83,000 miles on it and just recently it started cutting out when you accelerate and also would have a pop sound come from the motor. It only does it when it is raining outside. I changed the fuel filter on it(still had the original from 03) changed plugs and wires (original) cleaned MAF, seafoamed. He said it ran better until the next rain and it started cutting out and poping.Any ideas at all???

It probably needs a new coil pack. Mine needed to be replaced some where around 80K - 90K miles. Also, are the plugs Motorcraft? These V6's are very sensitive if you use any off brand, especially bosch.

 

Yes i made sure he got the Motorcrafts. Didnt think about the coil pack, is there a way to test it to make sure? Thanks for your help

 

Unfortunately, the only real way to test it is to replace it. I just know that it's a very common replacement on the 4.2's around that mileage. Search "coil pack" under this V6 forum and you will find some decent places to purchase it for a reasonable price. Good luck.

 

It's the coil pack. Mine went at 84k, same symptoms. Supposedly if you unbolt it and flip it over you may see cracks on the underside. OEM is $75.79 at Rock Auto.
