Pulley Squeak & Question

Well, now since it's been cold out... I've got a squeaking pulley... so I went out and bought some pulleys.

Here's a good question to ask some folks that have the 4.2l v6. Can someone go out and check the play in their pulley that is to the right of the alternator?

Please...

I found the problem...

The pulleys are fine! The problem is the plastic clip that goes on the pulley screw that attaches to the inner race of the pulley.

Called like 4 Ford dealers and non of them have it in stock.

So what I did was I played musical screws, and I moved the top screw to the bottom pulley, and took the bottom screw and put it up top. No more wobble. However, now the bottom pulley is insanely wobbly.

However, as soon as I put the belt on, it seemed like it tightened it up and the truck seems wicked quiet now. Also there is no more ticking, that I though the engine's valves were messed up.

Amazingly one little thing can cause so much greif!

mines got quite a tick to it. what are you saying, the bolt holding on the pulleys is going bad?

It appears to come from the upper idler pulley, by the alternator.

Ever since I moved the bolts/snap rings around to make that upper pulley tight there is no more ticking. In fact, if you listen VERY carefully you can eventually figure it out.

Trust me, I've spent like 20+ hours kneeling on my bumper looking like I am an Arab praying in my engine bay with either screwdriver, mechanics stethoscope, or cut garden hose finding out where the heck these strange noises are coming from my truck.

Oh, and one more thing... be careful! I almost found myself in a rather choking situation... I have nice Aeropostal hoodie I love to wear, but it has pull strings for the hoodie, I almost got it caught up in the engine fan at one point. Rule of thumb: Tight clothing, no jewelry, and watch what you are doing.

Edit:

Another thing is to take the belt off and give a listen to the engine with no accessories. Notice no ticking or weird noises. If there is tick, then your engine's got some lash issues or other valvetrain problems. Knocking indicates lower end problems like wrist pins, etc. Those are rare on the 4.2 v6 unless it's been subjected to the dreaded hydrolock problem. Ticking that sounds like dieseling is normal. Those are your injectors firing in sequence. Ticking that is not in sequence is valvetrain related. Just listen.
