Talking 4.2L kept up with a 5.3L

So I was riding in the left-lane of a deserted two-lane road heading into town and my buddy in his '00 Silverado 5.3L pulls up in the right. He nods (we're doing about 40 here) and I'm riding high in my tach in 3rd gear and we gun it. All the way to 75 (even after my failed attempt to quick-shift into 4th) I held him, nose-to-nose. Shocked? Here's why:

It was a '00 Silverado, with the big bad 5.3L. It was the 4-door model, and it had 4 guys in it. Also, the bed was piled to the hilt with work equipment. Nothing done to the engine. His only mod was a 3" straght-pipe from the headers out the back. It was the loudest thing I ever heard. Meanwhile I was riding near empty in the tank and me the only one in my truck.

After we pulled into a parking lot he started saying he wasn't even close to the firewall. But from the sound of that exhaust, I think his overloaded truck just slowed him down, along with the power loss from that exhaust. I'm going to claim this one as a tie. Comments?

the 4.2L is a very excellent engine. people knock on it because of the weight of a fullsize truck. if they stuffed a 4.2L in a ranger it would haul boogie!

I used to have a 05 fx4 with the 5.4. I like my 4.2 better than my old 5.4. Having a manual trans just makes a truck a truck if you ask me...but that my two cents

He was just toying with you.

An accelerating truck with a load on the motor will sound louder (like driving up a hill, pulling a trailer, ect.).

the 4.0L SOHC is a stout motor too, it's been in the ranger for 11-12 years now, replacing the 4.0L OHV.

producing 216 hp (161 kW) and 269 lb·ft (365 N·m) of torque at 3000 rpm.

respectable. actually, that's more power than the 4.2L.

but how much of that is actually going to the rear wheels? plus, thats a SOHC, 4.2L is a pushrod. much more reliable

Not entirely true. IIRC the 2001 MY got the SOHC, a few years after the Explorer, and the below numbers are taken from ford's website.

207 hp@5,250

238 lb-ft@3,000

From wiki:
"Currently the only version of the Cologne engine still in production, the SOHC version was introduced in 1997 in the Ford Explorer, alongside the original pushrod version. It features a variable length intake manifold and produces 210 hp (157 kW) and 245 lb·ft (332 N·m)f. It uses a jackshaft in place of a camshaft to drive a timing chain to each cylinder head. Three timing chains are used, one from the crank to the jackshaft, one in the front of the engine to drive the cam for the left bank, and one on the back of the engine to drive the cam for the right bank. Ford Power Products sells this engine as the SOHC-640.[citation needed]

A version of the engine is used in the Land Rover LR3 in Australia and Canada, producing 216 hp (161 kW) and 269 lb·ft (365 N·m) of torque at 3000 rpm. The Land Rover version of the engine became unavailable in the United States for the 2008 model year.[1]

Applications:

* 2001-Present Ford Ranger/Mazda B-Series
* 1997-Present Ford Explorer/Mercury Mountaineer
* 2005-Present Ford Mustang
* 2005-Present Land Rover LR3
