2003 F150 I6 low idle

Idles around 7-800 RPM on startup. IAC valve and plugs has been changed. Truck has a custom exhaust and K&N filter. Is this a normal idle? Owner is expecting an idle around 1000.

You mean a 4.2 V6? Ford dropped the I6 after the 1996 model year.

That's a normal idle when it's warmed up. If it's starting and immediately going to that rpm, that is generally an IAC issue. However, with a K&N filter, the MAF may be oil fouled.

Yes V6 my bad that was a typo. What's the recommended way to verify the Mass Air meter is working properly. Should I check for particualr voltages?

I'd get a can of MAF cleaner at the parts store and clean it on general principles.

It's normal *after* it's warmed up - on a cold start it goes to around 1200 or so and slowly comes down as it warms up.

i agree. my truck is a little weird since i put my CAI on it. normal at startup. if i get on it then push in clutch, my truck will go down to 400 to 500 rpms f really quick then come back up to 1k a few times. it never stalls but it comes close. but normal driving then push clutch, it is fine. i just shift into whatever gear it needs and let it coast to keep the rpms from diving.

also if you have a stick and want rpms to get to normal idle quicker, put truck in neutral and let clutch out. mine drops 100 to 200 right away then takes less time to get to 8 or 900

yeah pretty much every engine is that way. the escape going to 2k is a little strange tho. normally it is 1500 or below. my 08 f150 goes to about 1300 cold. my 89 firebird was like 1400 but it dropped fast. my trans am was about 1300 and dropped fast. dont remember the rest. only ones that had tachs were my 89 firebird, 96 trans am, 97 ranger, 04 f150 heritage, 08 f150. dont rmember rangers startup

well i dont have efans. but i couldnt imaginemine warming up much quicker. i start it in the morning and then feed the dog and leave. runs for about a minute is all before i leave and by then it is already starting to warm up. then i have 2 miles on gravel to drive to get to the highway and by the time im at teh highway it is fully warm. so all in the matter of 4 mins maybe. and when i drive the gravel i dont rev it high to get it towarm up faster. so icant imagine it being much faster...
