Hey whats up i just bought a electric fan for my truck i have a 98 with a 4.2L in it and i was wondering what wiring i could do to hook it up cause i was just gonna hook it up to a toggle and run it in the truck but i don't want to forget to turn it on one day and then over heat the motor. But i have seen the block sensors i can get and i thought about that but i'm not sure where those go into on the block. then i have seen those probes that just like slide thru the fins on the radiator but i dunno any suggestions would help.
And another thing my temp guage in the cluster quit working would anybody have any suggestions on what would cause that and how it could be fixxed

Just 1 fan?? better make sure if flows enough CFMs to keep the motor cool. Also you might want to look at getting a fan controller that can handle 2 fans just in case the one you have is not enough. Most of them come with kits that include the temp probe and a wiring diagram. Pretty sure there is a how-to on the site somewhere.
I have done a number of installs, write ups, and wire diagrams posted on this forum, search efans under my screen name for more information.
Sounds like you sending unit on your engine is bad. 97 and 98 they had two sending units so you could try switching the connectors for a minute and see if the gauge starts reading correctly

Anyhow, most fan controller kits out there can't handle anything past 30A and some require you to stick a probe between the radiator fins. I went through a few brands and they all failed on me - either fried or probe kept falling out.
I'm finally using the DIF variable speed controller for my dual fan setup. Works great and uses the stock OEM temperature sensor.
i'm just gonna wire the fan up to my ignition wire that way it kicks on when i start the truck so i don't for get about it. and it stays on till i shut my truck off. But i don't see where the wires would have shorted out i don't know i will trace it down and find out.

FWIW, I have had a Flex-A-Lite Black Magic universal fan kit on my 4.2 for about 9 years and it has worked flawlessly. It was cheap. I live in a hot climate and it has adequate cfm for a V6, but is way way less than what a lot of guys put on the 5.4.
Install was a bit of a PITA due to the 'universal' nature of the kit.
Back in the day, there was a thread here showing you how to connect the fan to the A/C compressor instead of directly to the ignition. So my fan is activated one of two ways: 1) When the motor gets hot, there is a temp sensor against the radiator with a user adjustable switch; and 2) Whenever the A/C compressor is on, the fan comes on.

i actualy have a fan kit for a 87-93 mustang on my 01 5.4, it has one fan and a adjustable temp switch with a probe built in, it even had a spot for a wire from the ac compresor to turn it on whn the ac is on, i had it 9 months no problems. i got mine from a freind but summit sells it for about $135, they also sell the controler separate for about 30$ i think.
