About 20 years ago I owned a Maverick with a 3 on the tree - even back then the kids didn't know how to drive it. Had one at the car wash trying to put it in drive and was wondering where the PRNDL was and why it was making all those grinding noises......asked him WTF he was doing and he said the only manuals he's ever seen had floor shifts. He didn't even notice the clutch pedal.

Again with this? Do you guys know how to calculate mileage? These trucks come in different configurations with different sized gas tanks. That's about as scientific as trying to figure out what it cost to fill the tank, then comparing that to what it cost to fill up another car's tank. Or trying to figure out how many days you can drive with $20, if you go to the gas station every few days with $20.

Uhhhh - do you mean to say you fill the tank, drive 330 miles, and fill it again and it takes 26 gallons? I highly doubt that.

FILL the tank and reset your trip odometer. Next time you get gas, FILL it again. Look at the trip odometer and divide what you see by the number of gallons the pump says you put in.

The only time my mileage has been THAT bad was fighting a 40 mph headwind at 85 mph on crap gas. It doesn't even get that bad in town doing nothing but short trips at low speeds and a lot of idling.

I'm always amazed to see these poor 4.2L MPG's reports. I average 14-15 mpg and I have a 4.2L, 6" lift, 33" tires and 4.56 LS. (speedometer is calibrated properly). I used to average 18 - 19 when my truck was stock. Guess I'm pretty fortunate. It's also normal for my truck to sit with the same tank of gas for a month or more as I don't drive it all that much. I do realize different elevations, climate, different mods, and gas blends affect MPG's to some extent but dang!

fill the tank drive about 300-350 tank is below the E line take it back and fill up at the same exact pump and its like 25.8 gallons... trust me im not an idiot... like i said my pickup gets 13-14 mpg on a good day. 350 on a good day divided by 25.8 gives you 13.56 now am i right or am i just reading the calculator wrong... im not lieing... i know how to calculate MPG lol

Okay - you are doing it right. You were not specific enough and left yourself open there.

I had 98 Scab with the 4.2 - my experience was just like yours.

I even put the K&N and exhaust - no improvement.

My brother had a 4.6 Scab. We both drove from the Orlando area to Atlanta. Interstate, 75 MPH or so, both trucks had automatics.

He got 19 MPG both ways - I did not. Side by side his truck would run off and leave mine sitting. Rolling on the highway it was even worse. When I stopped for fuel, my needle was below "E". He still had a little over an 1/8th of a tank.

My next F150 was a SuperCrew with the 5.4. No comparing the power and it got better mileage on the highway. All told, I spent the same amount on gas every week and there is no comparison between the 2 regarding power.

In a regular cab with a standard tranny, the 4.2 is probably pretty peppy feeling. But to say it will blow away a like-configured 4.6 is stupid.

The 1 or 2 MPG improvement (if it exists) will not add up to enough money for me to live with the reduced performance (and thus reduced happiness) of a V6 truck.

An overworked V6 can get less MPG than a V8 that isn't being worked as hard to do the same work...

To each his own, but don't try to make a V6 sound like a Prius. It is in a heavy, non-aerodynamic vehicle - it can only do so good on gas.

Flame suit on !!!!

Totally agree, and the gas mileage just cannot be predicted. Some people get excellent mileage with a V6, others get lousy mileage, and often there's no reason for it. I think mine is somewhere in the middle. I'm now driving 15 minutes over to Kansas to get gas with no ethanol and the mileage is significantly better than on the E10 goatpiss here. It's worth the extra 10 to 15 cents a gallon. I got 19.5 on my last tank - 50 miles in town and 300 miles highway at 75.

...I won't turn this into a 4.6 verses 4.2 thread like the other 5.4 verses 4.6 threads we have endured..

I had the 4.2 in my truck before and it was a great engine in a great truck. I wanted something different so I got the 4.6 in the same body style on as a Heritage '04 with 4X4. In stock form the 4.2 would be pretty equal to the truck I have now until I put a load in the back or a trailer on then the difference came out..

The difference is the same degree as a 5.4 versed 4.6 in stock trim. My 4.6 is not very off the mark of a stock 5.4 so it doesn't compare with my old 4.2.

If and when I buy another Ford, it will have a bigger V-8 (I won't say which V-8 because it may be a while before I buy as my '04 has 36,000 miles on it...).

WOW!!! you're an idiot!

i have first hand proof that they're reliable. my best friend has a 4.6 with now close to 340,000 miles on it. we changed the spark plugs for the FIRST time at 298,000 miles.

those motors are bullet proof.

saying a 4.6 isn't a reliable motor is like saying a 6.0 liter powerstroke is better than a 7.3.

p.s.- i BLOW 4.2s away all the time, with my big *** wide 33's. all i have is a flowmaster muffler performance wise.
