So, normally I use Mobil 5000 5w-20 with a K&n filter.
Right.... Ford recommends 5w-20 rather then the 5w-30 they recommended when I bought my truck new. I noticed a while ago Ford even replaced my engine oil fill cap with one that is labeled 5w-20. This was when I had it in for service. I can't understand all these recent threads about which oil is to use? Why not just go by what your trucks manufactuer recommends, it's as simple as that.

True, but sometimes you need to flip the page and read a new topic.

*insert hi-jack here*

Sweet wheels btw, what's the back spacing on those?

cool, I've been thinking about some 20's for my truck, but I don't want them to stick out to far, which seems to be the style. Those look good IMO. It's getting tougher to find wheels with the 5x135mm bolt pattern.

Isn't 5W20 like water? They put that thin oil crap on there for gas mileage purposes. Yea you may squeeze a half mile more per gallon (if you lucky) but that runny stuff wont stay on internal parts for long.

That "runny stuff" works just fine or Ford wouldn't recommend or use it.

Ford has spent millions of dollars testing these engines, I think they know what they are talking about.
With thicker oil the engine has to work harder just to pump the oil, so you actually get more heat and stress with a thicker oil.
I too used to think that thicker oil gave more protection, but that was before I knew better.

Cool

I use to be ignorant to the fact of using 5W20.I use to build small block Chevy engines,as a hobby mostly, and broke them in with straight 30W oil!Afterwards, ide run 20W50 in them.
Anyway, after lots of research, talking to Ford techs, and Honda techs,i'm convinced 5W20 is just as good or better then other weights. You think Ford spent all that time and money on 5W20 research just to say "use it"? No! They have built their engines with tolerances to meet 5W20 specifications! So,long story short, just follow their recommendations;your engine will thank you for it!

Actually, the Powerstroke was designed and built by International, not Ford. So, if you are going to go with what YOU think is best, why did you even ask us? Obviously you have all the answers (or at least you THINK you do).

i just take mine to the local ford dealership for an oil change for $9.95. but when i do change my own oil, the truck calls for 5W-20, which is what it says on the dip stick (i think)

Old habits and ideas die hard. Today's oil and engine technologies have very little resemblance to the old "conventional wisdom". I remember when multi-grade oils first came out - a lot of people refused to believe THAT stuff was right for their engines and still ran single grade, changing grades for different seasons. They also were the same people who believed that oil had to be changed every 1000 miles.

10W30? That has not been a recommended grade in most gas engines for close to 20 years now. Almost everyone went to a 5W or 0W cold spec years ago.

I also remember when the "hot" thing was 10W40 - well, it turned out that it was no good for certain engines because the VI improver was breaking down, and I think it was GM that said NOT to use it, use 10W30 instead. I think this was about 25 or 30 years ago - when catalytic converters and unleaded gas became the norm.
