Angry earthquake in my car!

Has anyone else had this problem? When my truck is in park it shakes violently! It’s so bad that the passenger seatbelt actually bounces off of the seat! What should I do? I have taken it into my local ford dealer and they said there is nothing wrong and sent me away with a free oil change to say their sorry. Could it be the timing in the car? Or what else?

Thanks for the help! This is really ticking me off!

Sounds like something is seriously wrong. Did you ask them to check for any stores codes?

Thanks. Do I tell ford to do it or is there a way to do it myself?

You need to ask a genuine FLM service center to take a gander at any stored codes.

Is your truck automatic or standard shift? What type of engine is it?

Hmm. Ok.

How many miles are on it?
At what RPM range does the truck idle at?

I'm trying to get some ideas here...

Well... a ECU or a computer... basically it runs the truck. From emmissions, engine control, to airbag readyness and such... It's quite sophisticated actually.

Hmm... 5,500 miles doesn't seem like something should go... but...

Is this the first time it's done it? How long did the truck do it for? Did it stop when you turned the truck off and restarted it?

I noticed it a few months ago when I was sitting outside waiting for someone. I'm not positive if it started then or if i just noticed it then. I restarted it and it still shook. When driving it is fine but when I stop for a red light or stop for any reason I feel it.

Does the truck have a RPM gauge on it? If so, what does it idle at when you feel this shaking?

I know for sure i do not have a tachomoter. The only guages i have are speed, gas, mileage, temp of engine, oil and battery.

Ouch... you got the super economy XL then...

However... let me give you my experience with the 4.2l v6. I've owned one not only in a '99 F150 but also my new '07 F150. Same exact engines and same exact transmissions; standard shift.

However, the 4.2l is a VERY rough idleing engine. People have commented to me that it feels like a diesel at idle. The truck vibrates so much, my stick actually whips around a little bit when in neutral. The seat belts and seats vibrate and if you feel very carefully, the truck is actually swaying back and forth because of the engine's angular 60 degree velocity of the cylinders. Thus saying it is normal.

What is NOT normal, is if you hear the engine pinging at idle, or struggling at idle.

If it sounds like any other engine at idle, you are fine.

It is just the characteristic of the truck IF it only does it idle.

Now, my other question... how does the truck drive? Is the engine smooth?

If you say yes; you don't have a problem for sure. Once the 4.2l v6 gets beyond the 800 rpm range, it is smooth as butter.
