disagree with the posts here guys. i dont know what you guys use the pickup for but it does NOT have enough power to pull anything... i pulled a 3000 lb trailer into a 35 mph wind and i couldent do more then 65 in 4th gear! on a no wind day it woulda did it better but not very good.

i got the v6 becasue it was my brothers before mine and he gave me a good deal on it...

all it is good for is a cheap set of nice nice wheels and gets good millage if your not hard on it... and it looks good...

thats what i think it is good for... any other time i pull a trailer i will use mom or dads diesel's no matter how heavy it is.

maybe my pickup aint as good as yours... but i no now that there is no way it would pull a 18 foot boat that weighed 7000 lbs or more or whatever without slowing down on every hill i came to... my pickup is a very good pickup to just get you there... other then that it aint no pullin machine at all...

maybe its just casue i am used to pulling stuff with diesel's... if you guys hooked a diesel onto whatever your pulling with your v6... you would never go back to the v6.
not disin any of your v6's

im just sayin that mine will never pull anything ever again. unless its like a empty single wheel 8x8 trailer it would pull that fine... but nothin more then that.

I hauled closed to 3,000# the other day in the bed, without a problem. It was like nothing to the truck... the only difference was the stopping power... and the sway in the rear end.

But because I've been hauling so much stuff lately, my tires are balding quick, because they are passenger tires, and not load range "E" tires for work vehicles. I guess the tread composite is different... but when these Hankooks bald out to the point it won't pass inspection, I'll get something else... probably some GYs or something... I do like Winston Winners... but I don't think they offer them in "E" rated tires.
no need to have E rated... yes it would be nice to have the security... but a c rated tire will be just fine if the heaviest you go is 3000lbs... anything more then that i would go with D rated tires... but E is just over kill... no offense to you just puttin my two cents in on it is all

I didn't buy mine to haul some thousands of pounds, just a 375lb 400ex and sometimes a 16' trailer with 3 other 400ex's. I have no problem hauling the trailer at 75 through hills that are about 40* inclines.

just a message in advanced, any question about the 4.2, or just about damn near anything, ask Manual150.

Id imagine his head is huge from everything he knows.

No kidding? Not surprising, considering tow ratings on the V6 top out around 5000#. It will still tow better than any CAR out there.

any other time i pull a trailer i will use mom or dads diesel's no matter how heavy it is.
Apples and oranges. I'd prefer a diesel for towing over any gas engine of any size too.........

Just keep it in perspective - if that's possible in your mind. The 97+ F-150 with a 4.2 V6 is stronger than a lot of older generation trucks with a small V8.

i pulled a 3000 lb trailer into a 35 mph wind and i couldent do more then 65 in 4th gear!
Isn't that fast enough? It *DID* pull the trailer, right? Last summer, I must have made 7 or 8 round trips between Chicago and Joplin with an enclosed 5x8, loaded on the way down and empty on the way back, and I have NO complaints about how well the truck handled it. I even averaged 15 mpg LOADED. I kept it to 65 max loaded because of the light duty trailer axle. Empty, I barely knew the thing was back there.

I think he said 40 degree, not 40%. Here's a site to compare the two...

http://www.geocities.com/sidestreetluge/grade.html

I also stayed at a Holiday Inn last night

Opps! typo. Yea, I didn't mean 40*. I would have problems walking up that let alone drive anything up something that steep.

If you think 65 in 4th is high rpm's, you have another think coming. With stock tires and 3.55's, that's right around 3000 rpm - which is this engine's torque vs. horsepower sweet spot. That's the same rpm as running 80 in 5th - don't try to tell me you don't cruise at 80 living out where you do. I just went from Spokane to Fargo on 90 and 94 with my cruise set at 80 most of the way - and got 18 mpg on 85 octane mountain goat ****. The 4.2 was built to *WORK* - at 3000 rpm it's not even starting to break a sweat. It doesn't even start sounding rough till you get it over 4000 rpm and it's safe to run to at LEAST 5000. I've yet to hit the rev limiter and I think I've had it up to about 5200. That was about 80 in THIRD.

Towing? My towing limit is 3500#. The limit is due to the M5OD input shaft limitations and/or the OEM clutch concerns, not the engine limitations, the 4.6's with the M5OD have the same limit. Our trucks have the same rear axle as the 4.6 V8 trucks. The automatic 4.2's (which use the same tranny as the 4.6 and most of the 5.4's) will tow 5000# or so.
