Grinding noise

I have a '96 XL-2WD w/166K miles. Occasionally, I here a grinding/friction noise in the engine compartment, and I pick up the scent of a burnt metal. Also, if I turn off the heater when I hear the grinding noise, it stops.
Does anyone have any advice?
Thanks, Melr

It sounds like you may have a bad A/C compressor clutch. It's worth checking.
