It's funny you mention this... I get my best gas mileage when I slow down. Heck, I did a round trip this morning of roughly 100 miles on the highway doing 62 mph in our Jeep Compass. I was getting 34 mpg! Compared to the usual 30 mpg we get doing 70 mph.

I think the extra 5 minutes longer of a drive was more than worth it in gas.

That basically saved me $1.50 in gas! That's a lot!

4 mpg is a HUGE difference.

I like to TRY to slow down, but when I find like .50 in change hidden under my seats, I put it in my pocket and floor it and burn .50 worth of fun!

I got 23 MPG on level roads (Florida, Georgia and SC) doing 60MPH and it dropped 10% on hilly roads heading north to Canada and the weather was colder too. Also, in very cold weather like we had in December, you drop another 10%. I drive as if there's an egg between my foot and the pedal, so I'm conscientious of the MPG's. It would be great if FORD would place a manifold vacuum gage on the dashboard. Just a little pedal movement can make a very large difference in vacuum pressure = mileage.

Big tires and a lift will KILL gas mileage - no matter what gears you have. My sister just got rid of a lifted Ranger with a 3.0 because the mileage was so bad - she was getting around 15 commuting. Stock, it never got worse than 20.

It's also the crappy low energy content fuel we get in California. Ford trucks really seem to get lousy mileage in our state. I've had my '99 truck since new, and the mileage has gotten much worse (especially city driving) with the increase in ethanol in our fuel. I also get much better mileage anytime I fill up in Nevada.

I've been visiting in San Diego for the past month and a half and mine runs the same on the gas here as anywhere else. I'm using the cheapest stuff I can find - usually Arco or Costco.

Yeah, I can tell my truck loves the cheap garbage gas... the less ethanol the better.

Your truck may run the same, but is the miles per gallon the same on California gas? The low energy content
'clean' gas is in areas with air quality concerns. Maybe San Diego has clean air so it does not need the 'clean' low energy content gas that is found in areas with poor air quality.

To the best of my knowledge, the gas is the same state-wide. It's getting comparable mileage to gas anyplace else that uses ethanol.

I was getting about 17.2 mpg on my last tank... this time I'm turning about 19.2 mpg. I'm going to be doing a 1300 mile trip this weekend. Hopefully my truck will make it.

I'm getting 22 mpg hwy, about 18 city so far. Still have half a tank before those numbers crunch down more accurately.

1300 miles, have fun! i can barely stretch 380-400 miles on a tank. looks like you'll be topping off a few times. would it not be chaper to fly or are you hauling something?

where ya going? bring back a souvenier!
