Loud Knock

I have a 1997 F150 4.2. It has 128,000 miles on it. It has been a real good truck until now. When I start it there is a loud knocking sound coming from the engine. It doesn't sound like a rod and the engine still runs good, other than the knocking. I took it to a reputable shop and they said it sounded like a piston skirt. They said the only way to know for sure is to tear it down. Has anyone else had a similar problem? If so, do you have any advice ? It is still a real good looking, solid truck and I am willing to fix it if I can. Thanks for any replies.

Have you had to add coolant lately? Is the coolant level low? Read this;
