adding tach cluster to 98 4.2

Howdy all. Searched for the last hour (wrong place??) but can't seem to find a specific answer.

Just bought a 98 F150 std cab short box with 5 spd trans. It has no tach. If I pick up a guage cluster off Ebay should it 'plug and play' or will I have some other issues to contend with?

All help gratefully accepted.

Cheers - Tailgunner

You will need to bring it to a dealer and have them reprogram the mileage into it. Especially if it's got a mechanical odometer.

ManualF150 - appreciate the fast answer. I'm a noob as far as this kind of thing goes so a bit of clarification will be appreciated.

Will it actually 'plug and play' at the get-go? and, as my original odometer (yes, it's mechanical) reads at less miles than most replacements I can find......can the dealer adjust the replacement to reflect the actual (lower) truck mileage?

Many thanks - Tailgunner

Yes. Just add the mileage to the new cluster from the trip to the dealer. The dealer has to do it to keep things legit.

I have a 2000 that the digital odometer which is out and was wanting to get a tach when I changed the cluster. So all the wiring and sensors are already in place for the tach.
