Is the 6 inferior to the bigger 8?

Hey guys, I'm new here, but one question that's been lingering in my mind since I've been loving Fords is this: My 1998 Ford F-150 has the 202 hp 4.2L V6 in it. Whenever I show off my truck or get into a argument with a chevy-lover or otherwise, they always bring up "my truck is more powerful than yours" or "its only a six! mines a eight!" kind of thing. Is there a good side other than gas mileage to having a six cylinder? Or can anyone suggest some good comebacks to make them shut up about their stupid chevy eights?

Not really. Your truck probably gets about the same mileage as a V-8. Try racing them. A V-6 reg cab short bed stick is pretty quick with a few mods.

Well, you are missing 2 cylinders But what are the torque #'s on the 6? I'll bet there pretty close? And besides, I'm sure you paid a lot less for it, and it is cheaper to run and maintain.

Not quite...the V-6s love to eat up intake gaskets. Cheaper to run? It still takes 6 quarts of oil, and gas mileage is the same.

LOL....I can't race my truck. I rarely get to drive it often. I've only got my drivers permit, can drive by myself yet, but when it comes to taking down the trash or going over grandmas for cookies, thats the only time I can drive solo. And how is it that the 8 gets the same gas mileage if it has 2 more cylinders and they're bigger? As for the quick part, I can second that. I've never raced, but on the short 1/4 mile from my grandparents house to mine, I like to stretch the gears a tad (*cough *cough 60+ in a 35 zone) then slow down before I approach the house. Maybe in a year or so when it FULLY mine, I'll be able to add all the stuff I want. But for now my dad wants it to remain the same when it comes to being performance-wise. Thanks for the replies.

The 6 has to work harder to move the truck. At hi-way speeds the 6 will get a tad better fuel milage.

Just tell em its easier for you to go more places and pick up more women while they are stuck at Citgo. Most people with a 8 dont even need it. Just like to think they are higher up on the food chain than guys like us with a 6.

You want a comeback huh? How about telling them you'd rather have a V6 F-150 than their Shovey junkers.--DIY

It depends on which V8 the Chevys have... if it's the '95 and older TBI 305 or 350, they get poor mileage AND make poor power (decent torque, though). The '96-'98 Vortec motors are decent in the power department, but eat intake gaskets for reasons that I'm not real clear on. The '99+ LS style V8s are really very good as far as both power and mileage. Your only comeback there would be in reference to piston slap.

WHAT!!! Heck no. I get between 20 and 21 mpg hwy and between 17 and 18 city. I've got many friends with F-150's, and here's their engine size and mpg:

5.4L V8: 15mpg average
4.6L V8: 8mpg (he drives so friggin fast and burns out and revvs his engine way up all the time)
4.2 auto: approx. 18mpg average
(mine) 4.2 manual: 19mpg average

The numbers prove it.

As to answer the original post, though, there's never a good comeback, merely a decent response if you have a V-6. The basic ones I had in mind have already been said. But best of all, you drive a Ford. They drive a Chevy. You automatically win!

I get about 17-18 on the highway with my 5.4, about the same as my dad's 1992 5.7. Personally I wouldn't fuss for one, they are not worth the 2 mpg to me.
